I have no energy! I've had mononucleosis for 3 months now, and I can say I'm doing better then I was a month ago but still have no energy, am tired and have malaise off and on. And it goes without saying I have no sex drive. How long does mono recovery take? Anyone have any experience with this?

Recovery can take from weeks to months, depending on the person.

Have you talked to your doctor about your concerns regarding your recovery? If not, or you don't seem to be improving at this point, I'd strongly suggest doing so since you may have something else that's impairing your immune system or producing similar symptoms going on. At 3+ months, seeking a second opinion and/or specialist may be wise, especially if your primary doc writes off your concerns.

When I had mono all those years ago ~cough~ cause I am not saying how long ago that really was had it for 4 months but the effects lasted quite a bit longer as I remember, my oldest son got it two years ago and had it for 3 1/2 months and it was still a good 3 to 6 months after that where he wasn't getting tired. Good Luck with recovery!

My husband had that same problem. We started dating about nine months after he had mono and he was at that point just starting to feel like his old self again energy-wise. He could actually go on dates that involved more than sitting at a restaurant and not feel tired the next day. Everyone's body recovers at a different rate. It's good that you want sex, and you're not disinterested or despondent about it.

If you feel like your body is telling you somethings wrong you probably should check in with a doctor. Better safe than sorry.

Have patience it will take time to recover and take a appointment for a doctor for fast recovery.

Sex?
Fuck, you are lucky to feed, bath and dress yourself!

Are you sure you are not getting reinfected?

Yes and I've had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome too.

You might have that.

I feel for you.

I've never been sicker than when I had mono. I was flat on my back for 3 or 4 weeks, and pretty much a weakling for about 3 months, but it was probably another 4 months after that before I really felt 100%.

Thanks for all the replies. :D Mono really sucks bad, at least I know what I'm in for.
It's good to hear you can be sick for so long, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Some days are definitely better than others. Yesterday I almost felt back to normal. However this morning I woke up felling like crap again....

This was nearly my exact experience too. It sounds like how you're feeling is pretty normal for someone with mono, but I'd probably schedule a followup appointment to make sure you haven't picked up a secondary infection that could be contributing to how you're feeling.

Mono is sexually transmitted by the way.

No, not exclusively so. I believe it is passed by saliva, which would probably be exchanged during a sexual encounter, but can certainly be exchanged other ways.

LOL - I hadn't had sex or even kissed anyone (mono is known as "the kissing disease") in 3 years when I got mono. I don't know how I got it but I certainly didn't acquire it in a manner that was even remotely sexual!

I had mono a few years ago. It sucks. I'm really really sorry. It took me over a year to fully recover. The worst of it was a few months.

My advice is to make damn sure you get a FULL 8 hours of sleep every single night. If I didn't get enough sleep at night, I'd be tired all day and my glands would feel swollen. Take it easy on yourself and don't try to do too much. I remember just a simple trip to the grocery store would wipe me out. Ugh.

I was having sex about a month or so after I got it, so I guess it didn't really stop me too much.

Also, my doctor told me that the "kissing" thing is a myth. They actually don't know how anyone gets catches mono and there's no way to fully prevent getting it. If you're going to get it, you're going to get it.

If it is passed via saliva there are many ways besides kissing to get it. Person with mono coughs into their hand, opens a door, your then touch the door knob...

I didn't get it through kissing either. In fact, when I first felt it coming on, I was at a party. Being determined to enjoy the festivities, I downed two Tylenols with a beer and had fun. I ended up making out with a girl and she never caught it. To be clear, I had a headache and felt lousy before the party; I had no idea I had mono or I wouldn't have made out with anyone.

Josh,

We all are different. Right now your body needs to recover. I am sure you miss the sex, but you will know when you are ready to jump back in the saddle. Let yourself heal dude!
