I think the Brits should get rid of royalty and become a republic

Royalty is overrated. Take them out, lop off their heads, and get over it. No one should be special just because they were born in a certain family.

There's another reason we have a Royal Family apart from ceremonial and constitutional duties.

If it should ever happen that the UK is invaded and conquered by a foreign power or taken over internally by violent means, then the Royal Family is there to provide the flag around which Brits who remain loyal to the status quo can rally.

They're our last ditch insurance policy if you like...

:)

Hmmmmmmmmmm, kinda like the Bedouin tribes practice of placing the oldest virgin daughter of the tribes leader in a closed carrier on the back of a camel to rally the troops. Quite ingenious.

I am too stoned this morning to get into a coherent debate on this but I too am part of the off-with-their-heads brigade !

Absolutely !

The most beautiful dreams came unto my head last night !

pp - If the UK were ever invaded, it would depend on by whom as to whether the Royals would be a pivot around which people could rally. Our history has shown much collaboration in that family, much cowardice, many family traitors.

There I go.......and I said I wasnt gonna get into this one.....so I won't.

Sure we should become a republic, see how much happier and democratic the people in the republics of Iraq or China are.

And how much monarchy was able to stop the rises of Franco, Mussolini etc

Lets not make this into a cheap debate

There are a lot of people who disagree, and came out a couple of weeks ago to say so.
Look if you want to be miserable, to live in a world where the grey men in grey suits are able to parade round acting as if they were as important as they think they are, then go ahead.
We have a way to put a little more fun into life, to add a little colour and ceremony.
That is more important that all the constitutional stuff.
After the jubilee celebrations this summer, if you avoided the miserable so-and-so's who would not know a good time if it bit them in the leg, you've got to have a soft spot for the dear, hopeless old Windsors. They are no better at running their lives than any of us - but so what, they are fun!
The royals are our country's pets.
Leave them alone you sad cases!

British and proud

if we get rid of royalty will that stop thousands of americans comming over to england and saying gee elma will you look at that and barging past people in the street with there bermuda shorts on cowboy hats and about 5 cameras round there necks

no it will not , let the people choose

What? Get rid of a major source of tourist revenue? A diplomatic lever and one of those things that set us apart from, say, France?

Besides, the alternative is a president. Someone who gets elected in for only a few years (at great expense and disruption) and has greater powers than a monarchy does anyway. What a waste of time.

Off with their heads!

.........and then open all the Royal palaces to the public.

Install President Blair and wait for the nutcase with a gun (illegally posessed of course).

Sell off much of the Royal's assets and turn the operation over to Disney. I'm sure they'd pay a pretty penny for the rights and could run it more efficiently.

Do you 'stiff upper lips' still actually believe that 'ugly american' stereotyping?

If so ... I have a bridge in the desert to sell you!

'fraid the sterotyping is acurate. You see them in London everyday.

Be careful when you play with swords. They have two edges.

The Brit's that visit here in hoards have their own way of being obnoxious. At least the 20% of them or so that choose to behave that way. The camera's, shorts, the whole schtick. But the larger proportion are quite civil. How can you tell them from the rest. Why the 'pastie white' complexion of course.

I'm sure there are many Americans who behave badly in London, but I'm jsut as sure that there are an overwhelming majority that behave quite well. The way you tell the difference from the natives is that we'll have a tan. :D

The biggest difference that I can see is that we 'tip'. ;) (Anyone thats worked the service industry knows exactly what I'm talking about.)

Of course there are two edges. Brits abroad often have a terrible reputation, especially in Spain.

It's unfortunate in both cases that its the stereotypical 20% or so that make all the noise.

If the Americans have a tan, they brought it with them!:D

Never having worked in the service industry, I can't comment on tipping habits.

Could they handle the freeedom after sucking at the government's tit so long?

Absurd, confused argument, complete twaddle -- summary:

Do away with the monarchy and your life will be miserable.

Life is more 'fun' with a monarchy.

People against the institution of monarchy are miserable, do not know how to enjoy themselves.

The royals are are 'hopeless,' they are like us - so elevate them to a high position, provide them with privileges and a life of luxury. (duh)

Historically, our monarchs have been self interested bastards. Fair enough, if they weren't then someone else would rebel and become monarch in their place.

But as time went on they gave up most of their power (various reasons, usually to get money from parliament). Now our head of state is not closely involved with government (not openly anyway). They're in for life, and we don't have to bother with electing them. This is conveniant for us and makes us appear more stable to foreign diplomats. Parliament governs, and we elect our representatives there.

The president (any republic) is a self interested bastard (aka politician) who wields immense personal power for a limited period. Then another has to be elected. The international community has to come to terms with a brand new leader with a different agenda to the previous one.

The monarchy does not run its assets badly at all. The Queen is very rich. The main body of the royal family is supported by the civil list (taxes), but then a republic would have to support it's president through taxes as well.
