I hated science. Not really, I just didn't pay attention. Too many other distractions - girls, sports, goofing off and too much to rebel about - it was the late 60's, for me to even think about getting good grades and paying attention in science class. So, please, all you brainiac's out there - catch me up on this...........

About wind-chill.

How exactly it works. No duh - we, our nerve endings, we feel it. We feel colder as the wind blows over our exposed skin. Mammals feet it.

But does/do other things feel it too? Whether or not "they/it have/has the senses to feel - cold that is" - can they/it react to the seemingly colder temperature that wind-chill purports and we as "sensitized, feeling humans" do actually feel?

Does grease get thicker via wind-chill? Do living species like bugs - stiffen up in the joints - via wind chill? Does a hunk of steel - feel/experience wind-chill? Etc..

I would think so.

So, wind blowing - as opposed to stagnant, still air - wind of velocity, wind of speed, moving wind - drops temperature. Even when the wind itself isn't actually moving, as in the aforementioned still air - and you or an object is moving through it, thus creating wind - like when you stick you head out of the car window at 60mph - that wind, originally still and warmer, decreases your temperature.

Hmmmmm????? This is the part I don't get - wind or speedy air - speed???? Hmmmmm? Speed to me - always means that there are molecules, moving (or speeding) past or against - other molecules. And when they do - friction is occurs - and heat is generated.

When a space capsule reenters the earth's atmosphere - at speed - creating wind - way up high in the super chilled, thin atmosphere - it has frictional heat problems.

There is no wind-chill regarding a space capsule. Only friction and heat.

So, why - this winter - when I stick my head out the window of my Blazer - do I not feel warmer?

There it is. If any of you could shed light (heat) on this, I'll surely be a 10. Have a good weekend.

I don't know...

But I think it has something to do with the speed the capsule is traveling vs the speed of your Blazer. But the whole image of you rolling down the I-95 corridor with your head out the window is amusing.

That was you??

Howdy.

interesting!!!

I don't know! (giggling)
I think I was one of those distractions in Science class! LOL
BUT, one thing that has always amazed me about windchill factor is this:
If the actual temperature is above freezing, but the wind chill factor is below freezing, water still won't freeze! I think thats weird! It could be, lets say, 34 degrees out and the wind chill could be 20 and that water won't freeze! Who knows...I prefer just being the science class distraction!!!

So, Brandi??????

Another equally confusing question - at least to me.

Why? Why? Why? Would a wonderful young beauty such as yourself.............

Who doesn't have to work, who only has the world and any guy she wants by the balls, who should be out letting said men lavish life upon her nearly every evening of the week, especially a Thursday evening (date night).......

Why? Why? Why?..............

Would you be up at 9am and answering fucking Sparky Kronkite on a net bulletin board?????

How come? I'm confused!!!!

LOL

Its called school....

I date...more than I should probably...but to remain that science class distraction, I have to study..ALL THE TIME it seems like!!! I have class at noon today! Most days I have to be up at 5am to get there by 9...yuck!

PLUS, I love it here...I can talk to the world without the threat of being harassed, hit on, or having my butt squeezed by strangers in a crowded room!

Thirdly, I have learned a lot here. I am totally engrossed by the interesting subject matter...you know, scientific things like wind chill, etc.

Fourthly, that guy I had by the balls...THEY HAVE PICTURES OF THAT???..Oh great!!

Good Mornin'

I am an 8 on the ole Spark-o-meter.

To confuse you even more Sparky, I heard awhile back, that the wind does warm metal through friction. I can't explain it either.

Wind chill versus friction

Pure thermodynamics. Simply put, heat is nothing more than excited molecules. [erotic huh?] The faster they vibrate the warmer the temperature. Cold is the absence of heat. At absolute zero, all molecular motion ceases.

Heat transfer takes place by convection (heat leaving the solid of your skin and transferring into the air) thus cooling your skin. It stands to reason that the more air that passes over your body (wind), the faster the heat will transfer into the air.

Wind chill factor is a standard that is applied that compares what the temperature would have to be in still air (to remove the heat from your body) against that at the present wind conditions.

Friction is another issue. Friction causes heat. [yeah guys, YOU know what I mean … but that is covered in another thread] Hence the space capsule heats up because of the tremendous amount of air rushing over the capsule skin (friction) causes the metal molecules to vibrate faster (heat).

Excuse me? Did you ask me what time it is?

...I'm lost...

I think I'll just go back to being that science class distraction...I can see I wasn't in Jakes class (wink) LOL

Afternoon y'all.

Started the day at an 8 but am down to a 4 after a big blow up with my husband. I repainted my toe nails last night and was gluing some Christmas ornaments back together before putting them away.

Well I went to bed and left the bottles of glue and nail polish remover in my computer area, an spot our 2 year old is NOT allowed in.

I got to go back to bed after the boys left for school and he got up with our daughter and started playing his computer game. Like he alwats does when he plays it he blocks out the rest of the house.

Well I wake up to find she had poured both the glue and polish remover all over the carpet in the corner of the living room, both bottles were brand new, bought last night.

When I tell him he should have been paying attention, how can you miss the smell of polish remover, he said I shouldn't have left them out. When I pointed out they were in a spot she wasn't allowed into and he should have "Noticed" she was over there, that got him pissed.

Everytime I go to the store or get to sleep in something happens because he doesn't pay attention to what she is doing!!! MEN!!!

We have retreated to out corners for now, but our drive to Chattanooga should be real fun now.

*HUG*
You always seem to show up just when I'm leaving.
I hope your Sparkometer rating starts climbing this afternoon.

I do seem to keep missing you, sorry.

Again, thermodynamics (heat transfer). A medium (the air in this case) cannot cool something below the temperature of itself. This means that if they air is 34 degrees, it cannot remove heat from an object if the object is at or below 34 degrees (in fact it will give up heat TO the object if the object is colder than the air). It can only cool an object to the same temperature as itself.

In addition, an object must give up a tremendous amount of heat in order to change state; i.e., to change from water to ice. This is called the "heat of entropy." [The same thing applies on the other end. Enthalpy is the heat it takes to change a liquid into a gas; i.e., water into steam] That is why the melting of the ice keeps your beer cold. It absorbs a lot of heat in the process of thawing.

I might have those backwards. It's been awhile.

And Brandi, you would never be content to JUST being a distraction sweetie. You have too many brains, too much desire and motivation not to use it to an end.

Ahhh, the power of a beautiful woman with brains to match. It takes me to my knees.

Hummm, that seems like a good theme for my next story.
