I see the bum was late for work!

On my way home last evening, I see one of the locals that work the strip on Columbus Blvd. walking rather fast with his cardboard sign under his arm, as if he was late for work. Funny, when he is walking up and down the strip, panhandling the row of cars that have stopped at the signal...he is limping.

All the panhandlers limp on the strip.

This is a job. And this guy must have to work really hard...he looks like Charles Manson.

Isn't there an easier way to make a living?

Well, there are advantages. Can you be fired? Layed off? Down-sized?

No, but there are at least 4 other "limpers" that work that corner...could get violent. And I think they share the same sign...

Ram, you're so insensitive!

He's not a bum as you so callously put it, he's a self-employed American!

I was going to see that he can make his own hours, but if he was running late today, then maybe not.

In a town where I shop occasionally, at every major intersection, there is one panhandler per traffic direction; they each want a handout. One day, as I sat waiting for the traffic light to turn, I noticed "my" panhandler's pack. There was a rather large salad from the nearby deli, a sandwich and a backpack with a well known name ( one, by the way, that I won't spend the money on). I try to not be judgmental; but, as I sit at these traffic lights and see "HELP WANTED" signs posted everywhere, I gotta ask myself why they aren't in there applying for a job. This is their job. To each his own, I guess.

However, the "God Bless" signs really piss me off. It is just to "get to" those sentimental or religious that want the fuzzy feeling of doing a good deed.

Be honest with me. Tell me you are lazy and don't want to work. You want to take advantage of those who do. Then, maybe, for your honesty, you'll get something from me.

Whew. Must be getting close the PMS time:) Thank you for letting me rant.

Insensitive?! Why I held out some change for him...but the light changed so he didn't get it!

I saw a guy one day asking for change so that he could get something to eat...while holding on to a plastic bag from a Rite-aid loaded with newly purchased items.

I thought about doing that job...I heard some of them make $50,000 a year!

the "bums" in austin can make as much as $200.00 to $300.00 a day. i hate to think of what they're doing with their money. they're damn sure no upgrading their wardrobes.

Reality check:

Most of them are mentally ill. They probably get jobs and then lose them immediately because of many reasons. They get clothes and back packs donated. The food and the bag from Rite Aide could very well be donated items from someone along the route.

I don't give money to the individuals. I give food chits, personal care items. I give money to the agencies who help them. I give blankets in the fall and any clothes to the shelters rather than to the groups that come by the house to pick them up who sell them to the Value Villages.

These people have never been able to function in society the way most of us do.

Yes, I am a bleeding heart and I like it that way.

In Dallas the bums are everywhere you look, once you get north of Dallas the police start hauling their butts to Jail.

The signs that usually piss me off the most are the ones claiming to be vets. Grandfather served in WWII wounded in action and still worked for 34 years before retiring. I don't care what you call them. They need to get an honest job like everyone else. They work their ass off unloading trucks or flipping burgers for a while then I might respect them until then. pfft.

I don't wish to offend!

Yes...true (2 sides to every story)...but I have passed these indiviuals on the street in new clothing...shopping! Of course later that day...they changed their clothing for work.

We are taking about the individuals not unlike the one on an evening television special who but two kids through college and drove a Mercedes because he made $50,000.000 a year "panhandling".

Are you talking about the Drag rats? They use their begging money for their rent, drugs, and various other supplies (budding artists, musicians, etc.). They consider tax-paying jobs to be a form of slavery, and they think they've kept their dignity intact by begging instead.

No offfense, and I am not put off by the comment, either, and hope I didn't make you feel I was attacking in any way, I wasn't.

I know there are people like that, but for everyone that uses the system, there is someone who needs it.

The guy wouldn't get his Mercedes from me, like I said, I don't do money, that being one of the reasons.

If nothing else, I pity them for their loss of integrity. Users. They lose something of themselves by doing it and most don't even know.
