President Trump's statement in the original post could have been made by Prime Minister Theresa May.

Refugees are different. The status of 'refugee' is defined by the United Nations and the UK (and US) accept genuine refugees but through officially regulated methods.

Illegal immigrants are a different matter. Unlike the EU, the UK does not open its borders to illegal immigrants. Most of them will have arrived legitimately as students or visitors and have then stayed on after their permission to remain has expired. There has been a number of dubious 'educational' establishments that enrol 'students' for fake courses that only exist to allow people into the UK.

Illegal immigrants should not be able to work in the UK. Any employer should check residential status before recruiting anyone but forged documentation can be very sophisticated. The penalties for an employer can be high.

The UK has had a problem for years with the numbers of legal immigrants. Brexit might address the numbers of EU citizens living and working in the UK but that is only HALF the problem and not the real issue. Non-EU immigrants are arriving and staying in large numbers. Actual illegal immigrants are fewer than either group but still in the UK in substantial numbers.
