So I have this website for my midwifery practice. I built it in frontpage cause I'm stupid and frontpage is user-friendly. I know, I know - Frontpage sucks.

Anyway, my webhost can no longer support Frontpage extensions which means my site can stay exactly like it is forever, or I can build a new site that I can update when I need to. Obviously, I need to be able to update, so I need a new site.

The thing is, I'm really computer stupid and need to find webbuilding software that's as easy to use as Frontpage. Does anyone have any suggestions? Help me please??

You may want to try Dreamweaver, but there maybe better ones out there now. It's been a while since I've done pure website building. Maybe Ari can give you a tip or two, you may want to PM her.

I have all my sites hosted through DomainAvenue.com ... and all the pages are built in FrontPage ... including the Coming Together site.

I have a friend who hosts me for free so I think I'll stay there. I just need to build my site again! Thanks for the tip, though!

And Zeb - thanks for the advice about dreamweaver. I'll go look it up now!

Is Frontpage idiot-proof? Mac-friendly?

I've been looking into Dreamweaver and it looks no more complicated than do-it-yourself neurosurgery.

I do have to admit that the last time I used Dreamweaver was at Version 4. The current version, 8, I have just downloaded and installed. It is a lot more complex now that it used to be. You can do so much more with it though. ASP, PHP, JSP, JS, looks like it also supports J2EE.

I did how ever throw together a small web site in about 30 minutes. I haven't deployed it but is does preview nicely.

I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE Dreamweaver, and I don't think it's very hard - then again I'm trained in that particular program. Remember when I was harrassing all of you with links to my exam project, a complete website, that I wanted reviews on? ;)

I'll help you out if you want, logo?

I used Microsoft home publisher to build my site for my doula business (PM me if you want the web address to see it)... which was easy as pie... but it creates really big files the way it saves... probably can't do fancy kinds of things like you can on dreamweaver and frontpage... both of which I own but neither of which I could figure out!

I recommend the same method I used for learning how to use my very first computer:

"Hmmm, I wonder what this button does? Ooops! OK, allright, ehm... what about that one? Whow! Can they really DO that? Cooooool..!"

Yep, that's the way to learn. There is alway the Edit>Undo feature to most functions, so no harm no foul.

Then there is alway the F1 key. (Help is just a keystroke away) ;)

...besides, computer doesn't REALLY explode and burn. They only do that in Hollywood movies.
That's true, just don't delete any device drivers while your playing around!

For the most part, using Frontpage is pretty much like using MSWord. I don't know if it's Mac-friendly, but it's easy and fast!

Above is a 30 day trial if you want to test drive Dreamweaver before comitting.

The program is really only difficult to learn if you look at the big picture too quickly. On first appearance there are so many tabs and options, but the only thing you really need to know for building a basic page is where the "insert layer" and "insert image" button is.

I also don't see any reason why you should have to start from scratch... I think you should be able to download your existing right into the program.

That's what I'm hoping to find - something where I can just download my site. If I can't find that, I'll copy / paste my text into it and then import my pictures.

There is a feature in Dreamweaver called "get," which is what you want to do in this case. If you download the program, just go to the "help" section, select "using dreamweaver," select the "INDEX" tab, type in "get" in the field thingy, and it will walk you through it step by step.

Thanks Helene!

I use a program called SiteSpinner, which is a nice WYSIWYG type web design thing. It can be a little finicky about some things, but then again, most programs are. I don't think it has a function to import your current site, though.

I've composed a really simple and brief beginner's guide for Dreamweaver. It's a great starting point if you are feeling overwhelmed.

Sorry it is so tiny, but I had to meet Lit size requirements and it wouldn't let me attach the .Doc file.

I would go with Dreamweaver. I used Frontpage when the first two years it was out, but after working with Dreamweaver, I'm hooked. It's alot more complicated now that it use to be, but it's ability is endless. As others have said, it supports ASP and many other web abilities.
Give the trial a chance and see how you like it. I learned the sameway everything else did. Ooops, I didn't mean to do that. Or, shit, where did that come from?
It was fun, but it was worth it.
