...who can help me make a writing decision I seem incapable of making. I've gone through the volunteer editor list, but I can't tell from the descriptions who might be a good match. The forum, however, seems quite full of people who can articulate a detailed opinion (I mean that in the nicest way, I really do
). I hope this post will help me winnow out an opinion that's useful to me.
Ok, I have a story (well, I think it qualifies as a novella at this point) I'm considering for submission here. It isn't highly erotic, just romantic fantasy, and the problem lies in the ending. It has two. I never intended a "choose your own adventure", but an earlier editor made a suggestion that I ran with, and now I can't decide. I've gotten mixed messages from readers, but no one has clearly articulated the kind of feedback I need to decide. I've let it rest for a while, hoping time would provide perspective.
It ain't happenin'.
I'm too close to the story. I can't judge which is the more satisfying ending -- which ending proceeds naturally from the events in the story and develops from the changes in the characters. I'm trying to create some emotional impact with the story and have wandered off the deep end into editing hell.
So I need some fresh eyes. It might be the whole story needs another rewrite, but I'm reasonably satisfied with everything else (I think I even have all the typos fixed, damn them each and every one). I don't really want to re-edit the whole story. I am just stuck between two endings -- the original, which is more polished but hasn't created quite the reaction in readers I wanted (which makes me think it isn't true to the story); and the one from the editing suggestion, which is less polished (actually, it's pretty clunky) but is going in direction I was aiming.
Anyone game?
