I want to write a story, (letter really) in answer to someone else's. The thing is, if the reader does not read the other one first, mine will make no sense to them. I have put things in a prolog to stories, but it seems most people do not read them. I don't think I can include a link to the other story, (can I?)
How can I make sure the reader reads the other letter before mine?

Do you mean someone on lit wrote the first letter? Like a chain story?

If that is the case it would work better if the person writing the first part mentioned at the end you were doing the next. Then in yours refer back to his in the opening note.

Either way tough sell. Some readers skip authors notes and some might not bookmark part one and forget to even look for a part two.

Is the other letter posted to Literotica? If so, I think the only thing you can/need do is put an editorial note right at the beginning of your letter (meaning, put the text between parantheses in the Lit. formatting) saying, "This letter is a response to the one titled xxx by xxx, posted to Literotica in the xxx category" and then leave it to the reader to do the proper linking.

Thanks,

It is posted here, but was done so in 2003. It's a letter to her husband where she is cheating on him and rubs it in big time. I want to write and answer to the letter, but if everyone doesn't read the other letter first, mine won't make any sense and I'm sure the scores would show that.

Well, fine, but you can't force them to read the other letter first. The best you can do is what I suggested, I think. (And lest someone suggest otherwise, you don't have to get their permission to write and post an answering work.)

If you don't want to take the risk by using auditor notes, the only thing you can do is writing your reply in such a way that a normal person can figure out what was in the original letter. Or you can write a different version of the first letter yourself and use that as a chapter 1.

That's a good suggestion as well

I sent the original writer a PM, but have not received anything back. I don't believe she is an active reader or member here any more.
I do think I'm going to strongly recommend readers to read her letter first. If they don't, maybe once they start mine and figure out it makes no sense to them, they'll stop and go back to read the other letter, then come back.
It's not really a big thing. Her letter is short. I just found it very disturbing.
If anyone is interested, the name is; "A letter to my husband, Mark."
I don't know about you, but it makes my hair stand on end.

Selina38 hasn't been online since June 2010, but she did say in her profile then:
"Thanks for all the feedback! I know I'm not writing anymore, but every now and then I check my email, ..." so you might get an answer one day.

Meantime start your letter:

Dear Selina,

I read your letter on Literotica. Why didn't you send it to me privately instead of publishing it with the title "A letter to my husband, Mark" which even gives my name for all our friends to see?

That way you will trick the idle readers into reading your author's note.

Good idea, but unfortunately

That is not the idea behind my letter. It would be in direct reply to his wife. The original letter makes Mark out to be an unbelievable wimp, my letter would reveal it was a cunning plan to get rid of his wife and his rival at the same time.
