Being an AOL user, I am constantly being "bumped" offline. Most of you are probably familiar with this particular malady. My problem is this:

When I am in the middle of a rather lengthy post to one of my favorite stories/threads and am dumped offline, how can I ever (if it is at all possible) salvage the work I have already typed?

This has happened to me twice in one day.....a deliciously long addition to a favorite thread and bingo...."your connection has been terminated due to incactivity" How can I either avoid the bump or salvage the material when I sign back on?

Or am I just spitting in the wind?

Sweet little beaver?

BonnieWeeLass....

I have been advised to try ICQ but have not yet done so. I suppose it is more advantageous and reliable, but good old AOL has been with me for a long time and I am totally familiar with it...soooo.....

Well, thank you for the input.

"Sweet Little Beaver"?????? I really need some explanation of that one. Whit00EK@aol.com

Sigh. It's happened to me, too.

There is a way you can save your conversation as you go along; I tried it yesterday, and it worked beautifully.

One of these will do...

Whit,

Try surfing with a browser that doesn't automatically close just because the connection is lost. Both IE and Netscape have their fans and naysayers. Or adjust the AOL browser settings, if possible.

Type your responses up in Notepad or Word and then cut and paste.

Finally, look at products like Norton CrashGuard, that give you the opportunity to save *important* items, even during an attempted crash or disconnection.

Best Wishes,
Paynie

You might want to write up your post in a word processor program, like Word or something, and then cut and paste it into the reply box.

A million thanks already

My sincere thanks to all of you who have replied so rapidly (I only set this thread up ten minutes ago)....

The easiest method for a computer illiterate such as myself is to "cut and paste"....thank you for the reminder.

Sweet little beaver is my honorary name in the beaver club. If you ever run across Isabella ask her about it sometime.

From one AOL user to another, AOL SUCKS!! But back to the point. The best advice that others have given is to type up your response in a word processing program or Notepad, and cut and paste.

Since ICQ is just a messaging system, and is disconnected when AOL is disconnected, it simply doesn't apply in this situation. Unfortunately, you can't adjust AOL settings for inactivity, because there aren't any. :(

One last sugggestion. Try another access number if you have more than one. Sometimes it's local traffic, depending on the time of day. Hope this helps.

Surfin' ICQ? (to the tune of Surfin' USA)

Note that even if you use an AOL dial-up number to access the web, you can still surf with another browser. That way, even if you do get booted your browser is still open and your thoughts aren't lost, er, gone.

*Wishing cable modem on April* ;)

Thank you. I can only wish for cable right now. It would be nice, though. I got this freakishly fast computer, and the modem is holding the whole thing up. Oh well.

I'm not on AOL, so I'm not sure this will work for you, but on Netscape, I have the option to work off-line. After typing whatever, I can go back on-line and post.

Hope this helps.

AOL sucks gangrenous donkey dick

ICQ gots lots of backdoors. I hate ICQ.

Unless you're locked into one of those 3 years worth of AOL for 400 bucks off any purchase in the store deals (thats how my StudMuffin got his laptop only its compuserve) or travel frequently, ditch AOL. Get yourself a local ISP, I do. Probably cheaper, not to mention people are there that you can call and scream at when things go wrong. You use Netscape or Explorer that came with your O/S, umm operating system, you know Windows. Yeah, you did say you were puter illiterate? I'm stuck with a modem, analog 56k, one each, so I fork out a measly 14.95 to a local for unlimited service and disconnects never happen, no busy signals, and generally faster baud rates. And they don't even require your credit card number for it.

For IM, I use MSN Messenger or *shudder* ICQ. Email, I use hotmail because it's server based, not Outlook based. My local ISP downloads any mail onto my puter everytime I hook up, so I generally don't use it. However, if you'd like to check mail offline, then wahey, you have it made.

It's been speculated that AOL offlinings come from too many people using the phone number at one time, MSN does that too, I used them way at one time. That kind of traffic is hard for servers to handle, kind of like flushing all the toilets in the pentagon at once. Imagine what it does to the plumbing.
