Hi All,
First I would like to say that this site is great and all of you authors are fantastic.

Ok here is my dilema, I wrote a story awhile back called First Time in the mature section. I have recieved some bad reviews from a few people on my writing skills. What I wanted to do is write some more stories but am skeptical on whether I should do it or seek some help from you guys.

I would appreciate some feedback on this please, my next story is a real story about me and a cousin and I relly want to write it but might need some help.

Thank you,
Axe

Ignore...

...the critics and reviewers and just write. It will get better with time and practice.

There are people on here who will critique your work without being cruel. Have a look at the volunteer editors and give one of them a try. Then try not to be offended and take advice that you find useful.

Personally I sometimes find that I like stories written with a rough edge IF that edge gives it a feel of realism and presence. I'm a pretty small minority on that though.

Good luck!

Advice for a beginning writer:

1. Read good stuff. Believe it or not, some things will rub off. You can gain skills through osmosis.

2. Write your very best.

3. Revise. WRITERS MUST REVISE. Revising is going over your story as many times as necessary to fix mistakes and make it better.

4. Use spell check, but realize it won't catch every mistake. Proofread and edit your own work first. Don't expect someone to do all the work for you.

3. AFTER you've made it as good as you can make it, have someone else proofread. Proofreading is different from editing. Proofreading is finding mistakes in mechanics. Editing is proofreading PLUS making suggestions to improve anything other than mechanical errors.

4. If you feel up to getting suggestions from someone else and won't take negative comments personally, get someone to edit and/or critique your story.

WS gave good advice. The only extra advice I would give is let your writing sit for a week before you try to revise. I know that I find it hard to edit my own stuff with out a little distance.
