Okay, I'm about to admit to being totally ignorant and possibly, very very odd.

I have no clue about bedding. And with ex moving out, I thought, hey! I should make my bedroom pretty, something I like. So I went online this morning to browse, and now I'm all confused.
I don't understand about comforters vs duvets vs all the other choices. I don't understand sheet thread count. So I need a little advice.

My situation is that I can't spend a ton of money so I can't afford fifteen pieces of bedding. Just the basics, enough to keep me warm, but something that will be pretty. I keep finding duvets that I like, but what is that exactly? Will it keep me warm? Or do I need a comforter? And what's the lowest thread count I can get away with and still have nice sheets?

Also any websites with good stuff is greatly appreciated!

(I'm so embarassed that I don't know any of this stuff)

You don't need super high thread count sheets. IMO, anything over 300 is just an excuse to charge more.

A higher thread count is a better quality.
Go to Overstock.com and browse.
You can do a mix and match bohemian look and not have to worry whether or not Martha is going to come in and grade you.

I think a nice quilt or bedspread and a bedskirt can do wonders. I bought a great quilt at Wal-Mart for $50 and then I made pillow shams, curtains and throw pillows to match. Duvet covers are way too expensive and a little unnecessary, IMO. As for sheets, I buy the 300 thread count cause I think anything under 200 is itchy. You can even get the sheets individually, which saves on buying a set if you don't need it. :)

I just go to walmart and get the famous BED IN A BAG lol, all i need in one bag for 49.95

So what's the difference between a bedspread and a comforter, or are they the same thing?

Ok, here comes the English lady :) All I have is a sheet to cover the mattress, a duvet and 2 or three different duvet covers (picked up in sales, good time of year for sales right now, really) and mix and match pillow cases.

Charity shops are good for getting thick blankets to throw over the duvet in the winter if it gets too cold. duvet's over here have different tog measurements, mine is a pretty low tog which means it's light, the higher the tog, the thicker the duvet.

If you go for a duvet, get a low/medium tog that you'll be able to use all year round and if you're a cold blooded kinda gal grab a couple of cheap blankets for extra warmth in winter :)

I am very much a fan of the bohemian look too, nothing on my bed matches anything else :)

Hmm, I think a comforter is more stuffed, where as a spread is more like a quilt or blanket.

Damn! :(

This wasn't what I hoped.

Sorry, Rob. :)

EL-
I'm very very cold natured, and my bedroom is the coldest room in the house. I already sleep with a sheet, three blankets and a comforter (the comforter is a twin, borrowed from daughter, because ex took the queen comforter- which is why I need a new one). I also sleep fully dressed in the winter. So...that gives you an indication of how much covers I need. And since I can't afford to buy lots, I'd really like to find one kind of cover to meet my needs.

Linens and Things has some nice stuff, but I still don't see what I want. I didn't see anything that peaked my interest at overstock. It seemed that the sheets were either really really high thread count or really low or not the colors I wanted.

SJ -it's a pain in the arse isn't it? so much to think about, so little to choose between *L* I wish you luck in your search, but I'm a hot blooded lass, and my husband literally radiates heat, so my problem is usually keeping cool ,not warming up.

Hey, I can see if I can detatch a part of my husband to send you, you can then keep it at the bottom of the bed to keep your toes warm :D ;)

C'est la vie, sophia.

And I can't believe you're cold natured, not at all.

In fact this thread helped me with a story. I knew I was using the wrong word for bedspread at one point, but I couldn't think if the right word.

So thanks.

I have a set of 1000 count sheets. obviously gifted as I wouldn't spend my own money on anything over 300. They are nice, but if the matres is comforable and your skin isn't princess and the pea senstive, they aren't worth the extra cash, imho.

A nice, thick, down comforter is amust for me, but I live in the cold. Mine has a satin/synthetic oputside so it's wonerful to lie on as well as under.

For me, the most important thing is how the beding fels. I use a quilt my grandmother made. it's not pretty, it is however very soft and warm :)

How many of us lit ladies sew? we could make a lovely quilt blanket between us, I bet!

i'm with the bed in a bag crowd. i've gotten three of them in my adult life, one for each size bed i've had, and they do pretty well. Along with that i have an electric blanket, which can put off more heat than even i can handle (and i've slept under a thick quilt in high summer in Texas before with not problems).

A good thread count is about 300. 250 is a little scratchy and will wear faster.

A bedspread actually isn't much of a blanket at all. It's what's put on over the top of everything to cover it all up. The sides and bottom hang to the floor, the top is tucked over the pillows. They're pretty much useless except as decoration.

i've got a quilting frame, for when it comes down to that.

If enough of us can make quilt blocks, and get them all sent here, i could have it blocked and quilted in plenty of time for next winter... Just have to set a fairly standard size for each block, and seta color scheme, and let people have at it.

What a wonderful idea, EL!

Okay. So I need 300 ct sheets and a comforter. That helps narrow my search quite a bit. Now if only I could find something I like AND can afford.

Any outlet stores around you?

I found a Ralph Lauren king-sized comforter for about $40. It's a nice khaki color (solid), so anytime I feel like changing the look in the bedroom, different colored sheets, a couple of new throw pillows, and voila'!

(plus, it's this really nice cotton, and it can be thrown in the washer)

Oh that helped! I had forgotten about Domesications. I feel like I'm getting a little closer to finding what I want. I really wish I had more stores where I could locally, but I guess online will have to do.
Believe me, i know and understand.

And that muted gold set at kinglinens is REALLY calling to me... *L*
