I need a corset.

My advice would be to find Etoile or Coy_One. There is a thread around here somewhere.. I'll see if I can find it.

ETA or if you're looking for vintage CM can help you I'm sure.

I make corsets. Etoile knows other seamstresses that can help you.

What are you looking for?

We really need to see what you look like so we can select the right style for you.

The very first question is: what do you plan to use this for? Is it just for looking and feeling sexy and then taking off? Is it for wearing out to parties? Is it for daily tightlacing? All other questions come AFTER that question gets answered. :)

I agree. If he just wants the look, there are plenty of inexpensive alternatives, if he wants real, waisting training, ect... its quite involved and expensive. Who is funding this? Can either of you sew?

I think I'm going to use it just to look nice and take it off.
What's tightlacing?

good lord how many types of corsets can there be?

Well, there's a lot of different types. There's underbust, overbust, ribbon, Edwardian, Victorian, stemwaist, extreme stemwaist, buckled, PVC, stays...I could go on and on and on, I really could.

Tightlacing means wearing a corset daily at 4" or more of reduction, usually 23 hours a day (time off for shower/exercise). You can see some tightlacers here and see a very extreme tightlacer (she no longer does it this seriously) here. People do it for a variety of reasons.

The main difference between a corset that is just for play and a real corset is what the boning is made of. It sounds to me like you want a plastic-boned corset top, like these from Frederick's of Hollywood. Plastic boned corset tops will run between $50-80 usually. The other kind of corset is steel-boned, and runs from $100-1000, you can see some examples in the corset gallery here.

Plastic boned corsets are really just for fun, not for serious daily wear. I tried to many years ago and I broke the damn thing. They're just for play, for dressing up for a few hours, not for actual waist reduction. They can often be uncomfortable because they will bend and cut into you. Steel boned corsets, on the other hand, will hold you exactly in their shape for hours and hours, and are extremely sturdy. They are very comfortable and don't damage your health in any way.

I wore a plastic boned fredericks one that was quite pretty, and yes, very uncomfortable, for Halloween. Now, for a few hours of play, it seems extravagant for me to purchase a $400 corset.

But you're telling me steel boned corsets are more comfortable? You do have me intrigued. And I have to say that I enjoyed feeling so tightly held. And of course, they're beautiful and I'm a fashion whore!

A steel boned corset that is properly fitted is comfortable... deep breathing is compromised a bit, but it's comfortable. For a while I had a perfect fitting 24", and it was so easy to wear that within a week or two I was in it 23/7.

Even with the plastic boned one, I could see the appeal. Of course, I've kind of been fine tuning my pinup girl vintage lingerie look for parties.

Plastic boned corsets aren't really for any reduction though - they're mostly just for show, not to actually make your waist smaller. Dita von Teese, Masuimi Max, and other modern pinup girls are all wearing steel. :)

I don't mean to sound like an ignoramus, but I don't really want to do waist training. I just like the feel of being tightly contained.

I should go review Dita von Teese's pics - because I think of corsets as more of an antique look...

Etoile,

i checked out that link, and saw the purple underbust corset. You made that? Its absolutely gorgeous.

Could that be made in an overthebust corset?

Inquisitive minds want to know.

After reading this thread, I am now going to throw away my cheap, uncomfortable one and start saving for a "real" properly-fitted one!

No, I've never made a corset! Oh wait, you're looking at the Etoile corset, LOL - no, we just have the same name! If you wanted that style in an overbust, though, I would recommend their "Victorian Overbust" style - I have one of those and it's similar to the Etoile although it doesn't quite have the exact same rear view.

 oops i thought that was made by you. My bad, im sorry.

Yum, I'm pretty sure I'm getting an underbust corset from the Timeless Trends e-bay store for X-mas. I've never worn anything more restrictive than renfair bustiers, and I really look forward to having a real corset with metal bones for a change.

I've been wearing the plastic boned corsets for a while, just for fun. As Etolie said, the bones tend to break or become mis-shapen. I'm saving to get a steel boned corset I've had my eye on for a while. :)

Tightlacing isn't for me, but I love the way a good corset holds my shape.
