After a week of packing, and cleaning, a month of getting the papers and the plans, and three months of waiting, I am finally in London, and it is my third night in my new flat. Well, okay it is certainly not new. It has been around since the turn of the century (and it shows), but it is quite nice and I feel at home. I lived here when I was a small child and I am hoping this will be a good experience as well.

I get to hang out with my best friend Bubble again (Bubblegoose) so I am happy, and I have the strangest job on Earth.

Can any of the Brits on the board advise me on how to get by here? Where are the good places to go? What stupid things that Americans do should I avoid, blah blah blah?

You've just arrived in time...

to visit the Erotica Show at Olympia on 1 and 2 December...

You planned it that way didn't you?

Go on, tell us. There's no shame in it!

Welcome back Sateema...

:D

I have to at least pretend to be uptight and respectable while I am here (will be here 6 months to a year) because of my job. I am working for quite possibly the most uptight establishment on Earth, but the job gives bragging rights so that is okay.

I didn't know about the Erotica show, but I doubt I could go. I have to be a good girl for a while.:(

I just realized that you said December 1st and 2nd, P-P man. Hell, I won't even be in this country on those dates. I get to go to ireland. Yay! I will probably not be in London very much.
I leave for Belgium tomorrow and will be there for three days.

I still want to hear from the brits though, and see what is cool for when I do get my feet on the ground here.

Congrats on your Move, I hope it works out very well for you. I almost shipped over in the Navy to get a North atlantic cruise which would give me a few Stops in England.

I decided it would be cheaper to pay my own way, might be why I haven't been there yet.

Myself I would have to visit some of the OLD homes there, I have a friend on ICQ that lives in a House that with an orginal deed dated 1520. I am Not sure if it is the orginal house or not LOL But either way to me that is Something special

Good Luck and Great times while you are there

I definately plan on checking out the houses here. My own apartment dates from 1898, which is not so old but still, it feels quite unique. I want to see Bodiam Castle and Tintagel. I am somewhat of a castle buff.

Not to hijack the thread, but I really do hope some people post responses as I'm moving to London next month from the States as well. Hmmm, and you Brits thought you had immigration problems before, now the Yanks are on their way!

Is actually originally from Iceland but my parents moved to London when I was five and to the USA when I was eight.

I still think I classify as yank though.

So you're working in No 10? May I ask what a US citizen is doing working there? You are a security risk. Are you another one of Blair's bullshit artists ? Being paid to produce drivel that nobody will or wants to read?
Well, you're not wanted.
Do you understand?
You are not wanted.

Nope. Number 10.

Cool I thought you were gonna say Loyds of London. Never would have thought about Downing street.

Can you say what you are doing or not? I got a thing for international politics and the working of foreign governments.

Maybe it's Because I'm a Londoner
Words & Music by Hubert Gregg

Maybe it's because I'm a Londoner, that I love London so.
Maybe it's because I'm a Londoner that I think of her wherever I go.
I get a funny feeling inside of me just walking up and down.
Maybe it's because I'm a Londoner that I love London Town.

Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square

That certain night, the night we met,
there was magic abroad in the air.
There were angels dining at the Ritz
and a nightingale sang in Berkeley Square

I may be right, I may be wrong,
but I'm perfectly willing to swear
That when you turned and smiled at me,
a nightingale sang in Berkeley Square

When dawn came stealing up, all golden blue,
To interrupt our rendezvous.
How I remember how you smiled and said,
was that a dream or was it true?

Our homeward step was just as light as
the tap dancing feet of Astaire
And like an echo far away,
a nightingale sang in Berkeley Square.

I know 'cos I was there, that night in Berkeley Square

:D

hey while your over here don't forget to check out the rest of the country if you get the chance, Londoners tend to think that London is the B all and end all of every thing but it sure aint.
The west country is Beautiful. If you get the chance visit Plymouth it has a nice mixture of new and old The barbican dates back to the 1500 or before.
The midlands has some great country side and lots of history, ie stratford upon Avon, Belvoir castle, Warwick castle, kennilworth castle. beautiful old churches , mind you the nicest and the most interesting I have visited was down in cornwall near st mawes.
The easten counties ie east Anglia the norfolk broads, sandringham, old windmills. country sides a tad boring its flat. but once again lots of history and some very pretty and quaint villages.
my preferance is the west country somerset, devon and cornwall.
can not really tell tyou about other places as have only lived in the west country the midlands and East Anglia oh and yorkshire
which as every one knows is a mixture of the most beautiful that nature can come up with and the worst that man can then inflict.
but the yorkshire dales are a must as is the derbishire peak district.

Thing's you will need if you move to or visit London....

1. an umbrella, London is beautiful in the summer but you should know we really do get a lot of sucky weather here, although Paris get's and inch more rain a year than London.......I like to point that out just to piss off the French :D

2. an A to Z (pronoumced "A to Zed) map book of London, once you have one of these you really have no excuse for being lost and they make a nice souvenir too.

3. a tube and a bus map, both of which can be had from any tourist info kiosk, you can also download a tube map by going to WWW.Thetube.com

4. a pub !!......if you intend to live here for any length of time then you will want to find a local pub to drink at, we have thousands to choose from in London so you don't need to take no shit from people cause you can always go to another and it's nice to have a pint on a sunday afternoon before going home for your lunch.

5. a copy of "Whats On"......er....so you'll know whats on, it cover's the movies, theatre, art, comedy clubs and a host of other shit that happen's here too.

good luck.

Yes, listen to Outsider. (what the hell did I just say?) That A to Zed is fucking wonderful! A Tube map is very useful.

Would love to go again.
