I've just read a quote attributed to Karl Marx (in a computer magazine of all places): History repeats, first as tragedy then as farce.
The first thought that popped into my head was the US 'empire' following the Roman empire. Tragedy then farce. 's'not political, it's just what I thought.
Then the words Holy Roman Empire popped up. Immediately on their heels the words: wholly Roman Empire. It tickled me.
Then I remembered one of my favourite jokes.
Two parrots sat on a perch and one says to the other "Can you smell fish?" which inevitably led to "What's orange and sounds like a parrot? A carrot."
Words. I love 'em.
No need for conjured images or people stepping on banana skins or convoluted long winded delivery. Just words.
