I read A Walk in the Woods, about his trek along The Appalachian Trail, and just loved it. His talent for forming rich tapestry out of history, geography, sociology and humor is rarely seen. I went on to read A Sunburned Country, his travels through Australia, Notes From a Small Island, his travel around England, and A Short History of Nearly Everything, which is about nearly everything, and have never been disappointed.

Now he has a new book out on growing up in the fifties in Des Moines, The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid . There's a short excerpt in the link. I can't wait to get my hands on it, having grown up in those best ever of times.

I'm a huge fan, too!

I remember taking "Neither Here Nor There" on my honeymoon and spending more time reading and laughing at his book than I did with my new husband!

I haven't read his latest yet but I will. I've been reading all of Douglas Kennedy's books (another American living in the UK - is Bill Bryson still in the UK or has he gone back?) but I'm looking forward to it.

I can't recommend him highly enough,
janiexx:)

He's in Hanover, New Hampshire now, which I think is what got him going on A Walk in the Woods .

Have you read "Neither Here Nor There"?

It's sooooo funny! It's about his travels around Europe and starts in Norway where he's trying to see the Northern Lights.

I sat around the pool on holiday laughing away to myself like a madwoman!

I just love his writing!

Now you've made me want to go and dig his books out and read them all over again!

And I think I'll be on Amazon tonight ordering his latest!

Thanks for the reminder,
janiexx :)

Count me as a fan as well. I was introduced to him by a friend from the UK, who enjoyed his newspaper columns there.

A Short History of Nearly Everything is brilliant!

I gave In a Sunburned Country to a friend who was planning to spend some time exploring Australia - mostly because I didn't want Kevin to walk barfefoot on the beach - or even go swimming, god forbid! - with all that venemous flora and fauna lying about. Bryce had me afraid for Kevin to go near Australia, much less walk around on it like he was used to doing on Miami Beach.

He sent me a photo of a warning sign posted at one of the beaches with a long, impressive list of harmless-looking things that can kill you. Kevin was wearing shoes.

Thank you, Bill Bryce.

wanna stalk him?

i think i have read all of his books (many of them two or three times). i personally enjoyed "a walk in the woods", "sunburned country" and "notes from a big country" best.
one of his less known books is "african diary" which i can only recommend. he just rocks and he makes me laugh out loud - something which hardly any author is capable of. :D
