has anyone ever checked their credit report before? I've been told it should be done every three years or so but I don't know anyone who has ever done it. Can you actually change anything on it?

You cant change it. Your history is your hisotry. All you can do is put a explination of up to 100 words on why you had a late payment or havent paid a debt.

I had an exam on this 3 hours ago. :) Funny you should ask.

If you owe someone some money and it is reported on your credit report I think it will be gone after 5-7 years after you pay it off.

I know when I first checked my ex's credit report when we first were married we were able to clear his credit up in 1-2 years by calling and talking to some of the companies.

Holy shit.:) Ok, here's another one. How do I get my hands on it. Someone told me I could get it from Equifax?? Do I have to pay to get my credit history? I mean, it is mine after all. I should tell you I'm Canadian, so it might be different from Americans, I don't know. Thanks already tho.

I requested ours right before buying a house just to make sure there would be no surprises. Which reminds me its time to check it again.

Sometimes there are mistakes on your credit report and if you can prove it is a mistake then you can get them fixed.

I think you have to have proof that you were turned down for a loan in order to get the report for free.

You'll probably have to pay for the report. There are actually 3 credit reporting agencies, so you might want to check all three. The reason they say you should check your report every year is because of identity theft. If that actually happens though I hear it's very hard to get that fixed. I don't check mine every year, just whenever I'm applying for something big (mortgage, refinance, equity loan) so I can see what it says.
