But Wellington Mara passed away today. If you don't know who he is, it might be worth your time to read this little article. He was a bussinessman with immense integrity and generosity. And he will be sorely missd in New york and in the NFL.

I noticed that no one had responded to this thread.

I had never heard of the man but I know people like him who provide support and encouragement to many sports. They give far more than they get and prove that altruism isn't dead.

I was pleased to read about him and regret his passing. The world needs many more like Mr Mara.

the funny thing about him is that he was so influential on the NFL, in a good way, but no one could do things the way he did in today's world and survive. There are good NFL players who are out of football. Not because they wanted to be, but because they were a few snaps away from earning their pensions at the end of last season and no team will take them on because they don't want to have to pay part of that pension.

Can you imagine any pother owner searching for doctors and paying the medical bills of ex players? taking care of their families while they were sick? Carrying old ex-players as scouts and advisors so he could keep them on payroll and help out without brusing their pride? Can you imagine a man who did all that and more and never once tried to publicise it?

He had such incredible integrity and dignity. Truly a man living in the wrong place and time.

Wellington Mara was a first rate individual. However, he belongs to an era when pro football players received maybe two or three times the wages that office workers receive. Many of the players spent all they got an more, only to wind up broke when they no longer could earn the big salary. Thus there were players who wound up broke and broken. Now days, players receive millions and things are a lot different.

An era passes.
