I Have Changed My Stance On Gun Control

I used to be absolutely opposed to gun control. I used to believe that the 2nd Amendment was being completely misinterpreted and that the right to bear arms (especially an automatic weapon) was not a Constitutional guarantee.

I have thought about this for some time. I understand the need for people to be able to own guns. I understand the reason it was placed in the Constitution. I understand that it is a right just like all other rights.

Wow, and Chuck Heston can accomplish this with alzheimers.

I remain one of the damn, dirty apes.

Even if you won't own will you go shooting with me sometime? :)

The first sentence here doesn't jibe with the rest of the paragraph. You might want to edit.

Having said that, nice to see you've finally come around.

Re: Re: I Have Changed My Stance On Gun Control

:p

What I still don't get is all the Second Amendment proponents here and elsewhere who think that the First Amendment can be cut all up "for our own good". I think you should support the entire Bill of Rights, not selectively support certain amendments and disregard others. But what do I know.

Oops.

I used to be absolutely in favor of gun control. :)

I still am in favor of gun control - but I am not in favor of the abolition of guns.

I was wondering this too but figured your brain just stalled for a second.

If I understand your current position it's one of allowing gun ownership while being more restrictive on semiautomatics. On that I'd agree. The framers of the Constitution wanted people to be able to defend themselves but I kinda doubt that 200 years ago they could invision their words to justify owning an AK-47.

I wonder if this might have something to do with the second amendment being a little more solid/real then the first.

You can pick up a gun in your hand and hold it but ideas, speech, religion, and such are much less solid.

or I could just be talking out of my ass.

I'm proud of you, lavender. Not for your new stance, but for being open minded enough to look at all the possibilities. If your mind changes the other way later, that's ok too.

Now, can I get you to think through your doubts about "semi-automatic" weapons. I don't want to talk down to you, you may be compeletly aware of exactly what makes a weapon "semi-automatic," and that over 70% of all firearms are semi-automatic. Semi-automatic is just a buzz word for the anti-gun lobby. They are using it the same way they used "assault weapon" to incrementally remove gun ownership rights. (To be considered an assault weapon, it only needed to be black in color and have a nylon stock.)

There is absolutely no difference in the speed of fire or the ease of operation between semi-automatic weapons and almost all other types of cartridge advancement systems.

I draw this little analogy. If I wanted to outlaw golf, I wouldn't try to do it all at once. I would first outlaw those powerful drivers and woods. I would try to persuade golfers that the game would be more interesting if they didn't have those powerful drivers. Then when I had accomplished that, I would work on the long irons. Eventually, I'll even get rid of the putters and balls.

just one man's thoughts

That's bullshit and you know it.

If you don't believe me then you take a bolt action Mauser and I'll take my M-1 garand and we'll see who can get eight shots off faster.

Really? Who exactly am I classifying? Let's take a look at my original post:

So, I'm being a prejudiced asshole by saying I don't get people who so selectively support the Bill of Rights?

I'm sorry it "fucking pisses" you off, but it's how I feel.

so PC, do you want to outlaw revolvers or pump action or lever action guns.....

I said "ALMOST" all other types of CAS's... bolt action is slow. But I don't want to be limited to "break breech" action, single shot or bolt action.......... do you????
