I have a question that may seem silly...

but what is considered a good score on a story? It's not that big of a deal, but I'm just curious to know...

Well, I know that, but when I look at the top stories even in one category, the lowest on there is like a 4.43. So I'm asking what would be considered good? Is below a 4 crap? Is a 4 ok? Or is a 4.5 good? Sorry if it doesn't make sense- it does in my mind...

You seem to be a prolific writer- what vote do YOU deem good, and does it matter to you what votes you get?

That Top Stories lists list the top 500 in a given category, so the scores posted there represent the top readers voted stories. Anything over a 4 is good. An average of over 4.5 is really good. But if I were an author, I'd rely more on written feedback from readers and criticism from authors & BBers than vote scores. A number is just a number.

I agree with Laurel, feedback is the important thing. Lots of people read the stories but don't vote. When I first started writing here I was watching my scores everyday. It go to be silly really.
Also when it comes to feedback take no notice of the mean emails you sometimes get.
I love the new features that Laurel and Manu have added. It was amazing to me how many reads the stories get.
I hope this helps. :)

Hey Lilminx......:)

As most everyone here has indicated, if you've written a good story (or poem) it will in time bare itself out. Trust me.......

I went crazy for a while watching Mrs. Steel go up and down from one day to the next, mainly because it was the top story #1 and the rollercoaster ride of seeing it bombarded with 1's day in and day out was irritating as hell. Especially since I had an incredible amount of wonderful feedback emails coming in nearly every day.

(I still get one at least daily even now). But point being, I finally
quit looking...it wasn't worth the aggravation and heartache of seeing what I believed was a good story falling in the voting like it did there for a while. But as Laurel indicated, eventually the readers out there (who honestly do vote) put it back into a favorable position. So the good thing is....once all the one voters are done voting (after all, they can only vote once) then everyone after that usually gives you an honest and fair shake.

I've written over 48 stories now....all of which (except for my non-erotic Halloween story)...lol, are over the 4.00 mark. So I'm happy with that. I hope that says something about my story telling. (I don't consider myself a writer), but since each one of them has been babtized by the one voters, for any of them to be where they are now is extremely gratifying to me.

And again...as previously stated. It really is the feedback, good or bad that helps each and everyone of us to hopefully improve, or keep on....keeping on.

lol.....Laurel?

I see I'm still a virgin again........lol.

Any idea when Thesandman will be his oldself once again?

On the topic of votes, I would be fascinated to know (if Laurel will divulge such secrets) the proportion of votes at each level over all stories.

Here's my guess:

Five thirty-five percent
Four thirty percent
Three ten percent
Two five percent
One twenty percent.

OK. It isn't quite a guess; there is a lot of literature in the market research field which shows that there are many people who agree with Thumper's daddy. There are also people who will give a real thumbs down, but one to five is difficult and one to ten is impossible for most people.

The most reliable figures are believed to be when you ask only one to three (bad, average, good).

- Sighs -
Oh what a fertile field for study the stats of this board would be!

Hey, all my stuff is sitting above a 2! I'm thrilled.

I'd echo what Laurel said, but I was staring at her boobs and missed it.

Not really. My criteria about whether or not a story is good is 1) me, 2) Laurel, 3) feedback, 4) votes. I've only looked up my "scores" once or twice.

Thanks for all your input on the matter. I guess it being my first story submitted bn this site, I kind of got carried away by the voting. I've actually gotten a lot of positive feedback so far (still waiting for some asshole to tell me how awful it is and what a waste of life I am *smile*), so I agree that feedback is more important. I mean, I would agree with that whether the feedback was positive or constructively negative, but hearing that people enjoyed reading made writing it worthwhile.

Laurel's boobs?

Damn......Killer Muffin, I'd write a Novel just to see Laurel's boobs....:)

Lucky you!
