Since HM is in the medical field, I have been exposed to too many horror stories of piercings gone wrong. You don't want to know about them. *Shudders* Earlobes are fine, 99% of the time, but other areas can cause trouble you don't want, really, really don't want.

And having spent a fair number of hours in life drawing and painting studios, most piercings just look like . . . "Oh gawd, that had to hurt!"

The unadulterated human form is so much more attractive . . .

Tongue rings... I don't want one myself. or my partner. but I don't mind them otherwise. I don't like the people who's speech is negatively effected by tongue rings or studs. I tend not to be able to understand them.

I see what you mean about a tongue ring seeming too pornographic or ruining the flow of the story. I think an unlikely characteristic on an otherwise well constructed character can go unexplained and still be great. It ads mystery, makes a reader want to read into the character deeper than the story may even explain, plus the unexpected can be sexy.

On the other hand people might find it killed the mood for them that your story had going. That's the nature of a fetish, they are pretty divisive.

Weigh your options, follow your heart, some people might appreciate it.

Haven't heard of a tongue ring; I've used a tongue stud in some of my stories. I think it's a pretty dumb way to break up your teeth, though (I prefer popcorn), so I don't see anyone who has one as very bright.
