DSL is down AGAIN!

Have to use this silly Bluetooth keyboard and a cell phone to get my LitFix!!!

Yeah. Life in Rural USA. Better than dial up I had a ew years ago.

We'll never get much better here.

I live in an area that only has one internet provider, and of course it's spectrum. I pay up the ass for 25mbps and get around 3 or 4. Good shit!

Besides a ThinkPad laptop, I have three Android devices on hand: a phone, and oldish and newish tablets. All are fitted with the LIT app, which can pre-load about 11 stories on each device. When the net drops or I'm off in the howling wilderness, I've got LIT. If I'm absolutely suffering withdrawal, I can drive a couple of mountain miles to the up-country branch library and leech off their WiFi.

Or I can just garb a dirty book off a shelf.

You should dust your bookshelf more often.

Lit not blocked at library? Sorta porny site. Would think a place frequented by kids would block Lit. They do here. Timmy's too. But not Starbucks.

^^ Well, I can only subscribe to 25M are rarely get that, so I frown a lot. The bigger frown comes in when I realize we may never be able to subscribe to faster, at least not in any traditional service. There are some cell plans, but they cost way too much to use full time. I was able to use my phone for the above on weak signal 4G that kept dropping out. I only get that on my pre-paid plan and only a limited amount of BW.

But, that's life in the boonies, 25 miles from town on rural roads with two or three house to the mile. Nobody really cares enough about us to make the investment in better services.

If i recall correctly, the UN had classified the internet as a human right.

So if consistent speed tests are lousy, I think you can request your provider improve the signal to your location.

If you can subscribe to 25 megs, surely they can ensure u get that at least.

Which is not so bad.

I got 3M in June of 2011 after years on Satellite. They've upped it since to 6M, then 12M after installing fiber down the main roads and new DSLAMs about every two - three miles.. Last fall we got 25M. I don't expect to get more than that any time soon.

The inside terminals and 1st WiFi are filtered. The 2nd WiFi is open. Not like at a supermarket down in the county seat. WiFi at the county courts, offices, sheriff, etc are all open. Jurors can browse pr0n while waiting. The local high school is just across the road but I see students hanging around the courthouse with devices. Wonder why...

Are you in Concho? If so, I'd just kill myself now.

My little town has DSL - 5 MB (I think) for about $100 per month. We have cable at about $200 per month because you can't get just interwebs.

Recently, the town brought in some kind of new fangled system where the provider has a radio tower outside of town. You connect via an antenna on your roof, to the radio tower. Neubeam, I think it's called. They are advertising 100 MB for $50 a month.

I'll probably cut off the DSL soon and try out the new thing. I'm resistant to change though and if everything is working I tend not to mess with it.

Maybe if enough people switch it'll drive down the cost of the other. 100 big ones for only 5mb sounds god awful.

Line of sight towers is how high-speed gets to rural areas up here.

Line-of-sight works when mountains don't get in the way. The cell towers near here are on the far sides of ridges from me. I must hike uphill to catch a signal. And no, I'm not climbing our tall cedars to hang a booster antenna at tree-top level.

I still have to figure out which repeater to buy for 3G/4G. My carrier is a reseller of both AT&T and TMobile and uses both of their systems interchangeably. All I know if s my phone is on HSPA, but I don't know if it's 850 or 1900Mhz which seems to be one of the deciders. Dual band repeaters get pricey.
