Someone in work today screwed up big time. They scheduled me to float to the E.R. (One of two places in the hospital I haven't floated or worked in. The other is strangely enough O.B.
)
So I showed up in the E.R. and got the grand tour from the Charge Nurse. As we were doing this the fun started when we came across a patient with swollen fingers. The problem was they had to cut the womans rings off as they were digging into her fingers. Unfortunately the ring cutter used by the hospital is a piece of garbage. I told the Charge Nurse I could get the rings off as long as she gave me the chance to do so, and I could do it without cutting the rings or injuring the patient. I was told to go ahead and give it a try as she called Maintenance for some cutters.
I went out to my car and cut a couple of feet of fishing line off a spool I have in the back of the car. When I came back to the E.R the Maintenance guy was ready to cut the rings off with a small bolt cutter but I told him to hold off a minute. I tucked one end of the line under the ring then wrapped the rest around the finger fairly tightly so it covered the knuckle in a smooth wrapping. I then grabbed the end running under the ring and pulling it tight slowly unwrapped the fishing line. This pulled the rings onto the fishing line and eased them over the knuckle. The Charge Nurse was impressed.
After this I was getting called to every interesting patient by either the Charge Nurse or the Attending. I was doing things I have been trained to do but am not allowed to do on my unit. Things like E.K.G.'s, Blood Draws and Catheterizations. I got to help in things like the removal of a Shark Fishing Hook from some guys Cheek. Things like working a Code and an O.D. In other words I was having fun. (This is my kind of medicine.)
At the end of the shift both the Charge Nurse and the Attending who happens to be in charge of the E.R. informed me they want me to come down and work with them again.
My boss isn't going to be happy about this as this is the reason she hasn't wanted me to float down there.
