Okay so I've been at my current job for about 11 months now, and yesterday (March 2nd) I was made manager at my job. I am so excited to start this journey, but I am also so nervous because I have NEVER been in a management position.. so I don't know what to expect, especially in a place like the Dollar store I work in.

Congrats! You’ll pick up the managerial skills in no time. Be open and honest with your staff. That builds a cohesive team.

Outstanding news! Congratulations! Somebody saw something in you that convinced them you could handle it. You'll be great!

Congratulations! My attempt to give you more confidence will be to describe my very first meeting with the clerical team after being made their supervisor. It was a disaster. A funny disaster. And my embarrassment in the meeting made it a very successful meeting!

There were quite a few changes I was required to make and coordinate with the group, so I scheduled a "get to know each other" meeting so I could present the changes. They were very aware changes were going to happen ad they were not all that enthusiastic about them happening in the first place. That especially included a long-time employee who held sway with the rest of the women. I was most anxious and nervous about her reaction.

The meeting started friendly enough. I already knew them all in a different capacity, so they were really interested in how I would be as a new supervisor. After about 15-20 minutes, I finally got around to the changes. I glanced at the woman to see her reaction.

She simply stood up and started walking toward the door as if she were going to walk out! She had to walk right past me to do so. When she got to me, she stopped and bent over and grabbed at something in my pant leg.

She stood up proudly and said, "I had to get this. It was too much of a distraction!" and held aloft a cling-free laundry sheet that had been "clinging" to the inside of my pant leg. The entire group started howling with laughter at my embarrassment.

All I did in response was say, "Meeting adjourned."

Your first day cannot be more embarrassing than mine. So, enjoy it when you start. And, good luck!

Trest your staff the way you would wish to be treated yourself.

Congratulations to you.

Treat the employees under you like you would want to be treated. Earn their respect and you will be a great manager.

Thank you everyone!
I'm definitely taking ever into consideration cause I don't want to mess this up. It isn't the first time this was offered, but due to.. circumstances, I couldn't accept last time. This time, I can.

Congratulations. I hope everything works out well for you. Getting promoted is always an exciting time as well as a nervous time but once you get into the routine it will all work out.
