This morning when I backed out of my parking slot Inoticed a pool of oil on the ground as well as a trail of it following my car. This wasn't good. Pulling back into my spot I shut down the car then threw some Cardboard underneath it before rolling under. Hmmmmm, no oil coming out now. WTF?

I got a good idea of where it was coming from as I was cleaning the bottom of the engine up. Unfortunately I couldn't see exactly where the oil was coming from. As I lay underneath I had my wife fire up the car again and sure enough I was right. The oil was flowing from around the base of the Oil Filter. U had the wife shut the car back down before it warmed up too much. Again I cleaned things up then checked the filter, it seemed tight.

Now I had a couple of quarts of oil in my storage area but I didn't have a filter or a collection bin. I refilled the engine with oil then headed down to the local Oil Change shop where I had the oil changed last. (Less than 1K miles ago.)

They replaced the filter and lost oil free of charge. They even replaced the Oil I had used to get down there. We looked at the old filter together and the gasket had completely come apart, the damned thing just crumbled.

Fortunately you saw that before the motor fused into a solid lump...or at least swallowed it's valves. I had a quickie oil change place misalign and cross thread the oil pan plug once. The leak was more gradual and I couldn't figure out why I was burning so much oil. My mechanic found the trouble and fixed it. I complained to the quickie oil change folks and they reembursed me for the repairs.

Yeah. Years ago KMart changed the oil in my car. They didn't have the proper oil filter so they used "the closest one they could find". It failed, the oil spilled out and the engine seized up. Small claims court ~Did I mention my husband was a brand-new attorney at the time? ~ and KMart bought me a brand-new engine and installed it free. Very shortly thereafter, KMart stopped doing auto work.

My oil guy forgot to put the cap back on. I drove for about two weeks like that, smelling oil every once in awhile, but just thought they had spilled a little on the engine. I only drove two miles to work and two miles home. Never a drip in the driveway, until I drove to the capital city and left a huge pool in the garage.

Next dumb thing...I drove home without lifting the hood. I didn't want to look, but I drove the car right back to the garage that did the oil change. OMG. What a freaking mess under the hood. It was everywhere.

They cleaned it up and bought me a new cap (whoopee). Then, I drove down the street where I worked and found my oil cap on the side of the street. I had heard it fall out a few days before that, but I just thought I had run over a rock in the street.

They offered to give me two free oil changes after that, but guess what? They went out of business before my 3,000 miles. Even a lawyer couldn't have helped me.
