Masseur.

The word is a borrowing from French, which has obligate grammatical gender on all its nouns. "Masseuse" has the -se suffix which marks it feminine, "masseur" has the -r. This works for any male-identifying life form or indeed robot.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

[Yes, I just read yet another story where this error comes up every other sentence, it's incredibly common. For some reason the error is one-way, it's never a female masseur.]

(I have actually heard Americans do this in speech, so perhaps the language is changing. But I am far from ready to accept this one.)

By coincidence, I have just watched a subtitled Japanese porn film where a woman describes herself as a masseur. I think the subtitles are done in the US.

Plot twist: the woman is pre-op TG, so perhaps it is the correct usage.

Similar advice applies to other French-originated nouns that have gendered variations.

The common ones include fiance (male) and fiancee (female), as well as cheese (Roquefort) and cheesee (gorgonzola).

Similarly, a man with light-coloured hair is blond or, if you must, 'a blond'. He is definitely not a blonde!

(Authors of Daniel Craig-era James Bond fanfic, take note. Please?)

Yes, this does mean a guy with brown hair is technically a brunet, but that doesn't mean you have to use the word. Brunette is dated enough. And 'noirette' is a word I've never seen outside bad fanfic.

Maybe I'm imagining things, but I'm pretty sure I heard -- in some 'common writing mistakes' video, I believe -- that "blond" is the adjective describing hair, whereas "blonde" is the person (regardless of gender).

Perhaps it's one of those things where it matters which side of the pond you're on.

I had a covid vaccine yesterday and an old fogey flu shot. That arm could use a masseur or a masseuse.

I would like to remind everyone in this thread of the old adage, that he who would pun would pick a pocket :p

A touchy subject... a sore subject... [grooooaaaaannnn]
