Do you think those were the good ol' days?

The average life expectancy in the U.S. was forty-seven.

Only 14 percent of the homes in the U.S. had a bathtub.

Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone. A three-minute call from Denver to New York City cost eleven dollars.

There were only 8,000 cars in the U.S. and only 144 miles of paved
roads. The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.

Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more
heavily-populated than California. With a mere 1.4 million residents,
California was only the 21st most-populous state in the Union.

The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower.

The average wage in the U.S. was 22 cents an hour. The average U.S.
worker made between $200 and $400 per year.

A competent accountant could expect to earn $2,000 per year, a dentist$2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.

More than 95 percent of all births in the U.S. took place at home.

Ninety percent of all U.S. physicians had no college education.
Instead, they attended medical schools - many of which were condemned in the press and by the government as "substandard."

Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee cost fifteen cents a pound.

Most women only washed their hair once a month and used borax or egg yolks for shampoo.

Canada passed a law prohibiting poor people from entering the country for any reason.

The five leading causes of death in the U.S. were: 1) pneumonia and
influenza, 2) tuberculosis,3) diarrhea, 4) heart disease, and 5)
stroke.

The American flag had 45 stars. Arizona (admitted in 1912),
Oklahoma(admitted in 1907),New Mexico (admitted in 1912), Hawaii
(admitted in 1959), and Alaska(admitted in 1960) hadn't been admitted to the Union yet.

The population of Las Vegas, Nevada, was 30.

Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented.

There were no Mother's Day or Father's Day.

One in ten U.S. adults couldn't read or write. Only 6 percent of all
Americans had graduated from high school.

Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over-the-counter at corner drugstores. According to one pharmacist, "Heroin clears the
complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and the bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health."

Eighteen percent of households in the U.S. had at least one full-time
servant or domestic.

There were only about 230 reported murders in the entire U.S.

1880 to 1900 or that time frame? Been reading the old census data or just an e-mail you got?

Can't be this time frame, 1880 to 1900. Look at the clues. Cars, telephones. Before 1912, according to the flag clue...

You could still buy opium over the counter in the late 30's early 40's my mother would go and get it for my grandmother she used it when someone had a cold.

back when candy bars were a nickle, and comic books were a dime. when kids had to walk 10 miles to school through deadly blizzards, uphill both ways.

:D

good ole days? These are the current conditions in most third world countries today. There are still countries that what we make in a week or two, they make all year long. $1000 american dollars would feed a family in Russia for a life time.

Actually, while it has to be between 1889 and 1912, (eiffel tower built in 1889, Arizona Statehood in 1912,) it could be facts from either the 1890, 1900, or 1910 census. 1910 is too late for the number of cars given, and 1890 is probably too early for the number of phones -- I didn't search for the dates of invention and first transcontinental line but I think they're 1890's time frame.

This is probably circa 1900 in the USA, but as pointed out, it's today for a significant percentage of the world's population.

Actually, the data is from 1902, there are pluses and minuses to living then. Frankly, I could give a fuck about "turd" world countries, in the 21st century, there is no excuse except corruption and stupidity, for being where we were 100 years ago.
Pluses: Clean Air
Clean water
low cost of living
The government not having control over you.
No federal taxes yet

Minuses: Life expectancy
Medical knowledge (surgical)
No Harley-Davidson yet
Time span for inter-communications

**We've come a long way baby!** :D

Oh there are tons of reasons but if you don't know them by now I am not going to point them out.

:D

There speaks a man who has not yet lived.

One of the reasons I love teaching history is this kind of stuff.

Think about how far we have come in just 100 years. Hell think about how far we have come in just the last 20 years.

I myself am amazed. If it continues like this, how far will we have gotten by 3002? I wish I was going to be around to see. Who knows, I may well be. ;)
