I did something weird...

Yeah, I do that too, all the time. In fact, it'd seem weird not to; every submission I have on Lit right now was written to an image. Sometimes having that visual there is a huge help, just as some writers like writing to music (also me)

I did something weird while writing.

Not weird at all. When I write characters, I base them (usually physically only) on people I actually know quite well, and that helps me focus on how to describe them. I know other writers who do the same with actors and actresses. In fact, it's common to write a character with such an actor in mind. I hear Mario Puzo had Marlon Brando in the back of his mind when he created Vito Corleone, and was delighted when Coppola actually got Brando for the Part.

And Anne Rice based Lestat on Rutger Hauer, and was disappointed when he was passed over in favor of Tom Cruise (although, in all fairness, she decided that Cruise played the role quite well).

I'm trying to imagine how much more better that film would have been with Hauer in the lead.

Damn.

I did something weird while writing. I was having problems envisioning my heroine so I scoured the web and came across the lovely Doutzen Kroes. I thought she was perfect for my untouchable character so I saved a pic of her and imported it to Word. I kept her picture at the bottom, just below the line where the typing cursor is. I thought I needed her ever-present to remind me of how she looks like.

After a couple of days I re-read some chapters and in almost every paragraph with her in it there's either the word "stunning" "blonde" "bombshell" and words like that. It was weird, I don't know if I should laugh out loud or slap myself.

Any of you guys did something "weird" while writing?

I am in awiritng program and during my last unit, playwriting, they recommended we pick photos online for our characters and work to them.

I always have a concrete physical model of a character. It maybe a pic stolen from the internet or someone I know. It helps keep things consistent.

Ditto here. I have folders of photos full of reference pictures for different stories and scenes. I think it's useful.

I go beyond that. I download videotape samples from the ads on the Lit. home page and use them for inspiration before writing. Sometimes, before I start a day of writing, I run some of them to get my mind in a dirty mode.
