Well, not quite, but I could have.

For the past few months I figured something was not quite right. And, despite my denials, I suspected diabetes. I had some of the classic warning signs. Frequent thirst, frequent urination, fatigue etc. I wrote most of them off to the fact that it's hot in the desert in the summer, and work was extremely busy. I made a mental note to make an appointment to see the family doctor after coming back from vacation.

That's all and fine. I didn't make it home from vacation. I had an MI. A fairly serious one, there could be some permanent damage. I won't really know for a few months. But, my blood sugar. In the ER, it was 47.4 mmol/l or 853 mg/dl. A normal blood/glucose reading is 4-7 mmol/l or 72 - 126 mg/dg. I didn't have blood in my veins, I had Log Cabin pancake syrup.

I'm a type 2 diabetic and on insulin now. My blood sugars are in the normal range, and my heart continues to chug right along.

My purpose in telling my tale of woe is not to evoke sympathy, but in hopes that just maybe one person will read it and not take as long I did, or to have to go through what I have to be checked out.

Diabetes is not the end of the world. A heart attack could be.

Wondered where you'd been.

Good to see you and glad to hear your okay.

I have a physical scheduled for October.

One of my sisters is a Type 1 diabetic. She's been in the hospital for keto-acidosis a few times now, and each time has been worse than the time before. Please, please, please take good care of yourself. Follow your doctor's instructions to the letter no matter how good you feel, how inconvenient it gets, or how expensive it gets.

I'm glad to hear that you made it through. :rose:

It can be quite scary. I've been diabetic since around 2001 or so and fortunately, my doctor caught it early enough so I'm able to control it with oral medication.

My brother wasn't so lucky, but he did manage to survive, thank goodness. He ended up in emergency because his sugar was up around 700...although he didn't know it at the time. He was on insulin for about a year, but now he's on oral meds.

Glad you're okay.

Welcome back to the land of the living, doll. I was worried about you. Diabetes is rampant in my family, and nothing to trifle with.

You have a new life, now. Treat it with precious care.

Damn, Cowboy.

Am very glad you're still around to tell the tale.

Take care of you.

Glad you made it! All too many of us don't when we avoid Drs until it's life threatening.
Thanks for the heads up and I guess I'll call my Dr. for a checkup. It's only been two years since the last physical, he reminds me in Church. I remind him that the last one before that was a discharge physical from the Navy in Jan. 1980!

Guess I am the one Brian is warning about

I've missed you *hugs* So glad you're okay now and make sure you take care!

Welcome back Drksideofthemoon!

I hope that this is a lesson that a man can go and see a doctor. They don't tattoo 'wimp' on your forehead.

That's what it took for my father. Does this mean you've learned your lesson and overcome your allergy to doctors? I'm glad you caught it in time for treatment. :rose:

The same thing recently happened to my aunt. It was a scary moment for our entire family. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. I know my aunt is struggling with getting regulated still, but she says she's feeling better than she has in a long time. I hope the same (sans regulatory prolems) for you, too. Take care.

Glad you're back!

Yeah, diabetes can get you. So can blood pressure, triglyceroids, cholesterol and a host of other sneaky li'l bastards. That's why you see the doc reg'lar, so he/she can wop you upside the head and get you back under control. Sit! Stay! Take meds!

:D

I am so glad that you're ok now. My only sister died four years ago from complications of diabetes. She had kidney failure and was on dialysis and developed a blood clot. She was only fifty-six. I was going to give her one of my kidney's but it was too late. I take that disease very seriously and watch my weight and what I eat and drink.

hello... i had wondered where you are and missed you... scary to hear that, and glad you are okay now...

Fear is what keeps us from visiting the doctor. We adjust and make excuses about feeling poorly blaming everything except serious illness. Really Glad you got through that, Dark and returned triumphant (and sweetly) to tell the tale.

Don't mess about AHer's - feeling less than normal, go see a medic.

We all like to think we're invincible... until something lets us know we're not. Glad to hear you're doing okay now. :rose:

Whew. That was a close one. Glad it turned out the way it did!

But I always knew you were sweet. ;)

Wife checked my BP
Blood Pressure wa 110/68 :nana:
Not bad for a 51 year old that quit smoking in Dec. after 36 years.
Will make an apointment tomorrow.

Brian, wife want's to give you a hug ;)
