Well, not quite, but I could have.
For the past few months I figured something was not quite right. And, despite my denials, I suspected diabetes. I had some of the classic warning signs. Frequent thirst, frequent urination, fatigue etc. I wrote most of them off to the fact that it's hot in the desert in the summer, and work was extremely busy. I made a mental note to make an appointment to see the family doctor after coming back from vacation.
That's all and fine. I didn't make it home from vacation. I had an MI. A fairly serious one, there could be some permanent damage. I won't really know for a few months. But, my blood sugar. In the ER, it was 47.4 mmol/l or 853 mg/dl. A normal blood/glucose reading is 4-7 mmol/l or 72 - 126 mg/dg. I didn't have blood in my veins, I had Log Cabin pancake syrup.
I'm a type 2 diabetic and on insulin now. My blood sugars are in the normal range, and my heart continues to chug right along.
My purpose in telling my tale of woe is not to evoke sympathy, but in hopes that just maybe one person will read it and not take as long I did, or to have to go through what I have to be checked out.
Diabetes is not the end of the world. A heart attack could be.
