The invitation arrived at the White House a few days before last week's historic World Cup victory by the United States over Mexico.

It was from the Mexican President Vincente Fox, suggesting that President George Bush and he watch the game together, as a gesture of friendship between neighbouring nations. The reply came, from a member of Bush's staff: the President would be asleep at that hour of the night.

It mattered little, since most of his nation was likewise in slumber - but the rebuff spoke volumes to columnists and Washington DC observers about the clueless, crassly selfish quality of a President and a presidency which are suddenly lurching, rather than governing, at the apex of American power."

Or perhaps the rebuff had to do with armed incursions by Mexican military troops over the border into the US? You think just maybe?

The press hasn't got a clue.

It could be.

Bush is stupid enough to consider that enough evidence to carry out a major diplomatic snub against your next door neighbour.

At least as they watched the match they could have discussed these 'armed incursions'.

But Bush was, as usual, too gormless to see the opportunity.

And I'd say the press with its large information gathering system has more of a clue than Bush who's two primary security agencies don't even talk to each other...by law!

Damned if you do, damned if you don't

He would get skewered by the press either choice he made.

Option 1: Turn the offer down and be accused of being rude etc etc.

Option 2: Go and be accused of f***ing off to Mexico to watch a stupid soccer game while the Middle East meltdown continues.

It's a no win situation.

He's President of the United States, he's got more important things to do than pull an all-nighter to watch football!

Yeah that's true. He could be trying to rescue a crumbling domestic policy instead.

But back to these 'armed incursions'....

:)

First to Metal-minx. It was reported last week, barely, when an armed Mexican Army patrol fired on a US Border Patrol agent.

The incursions have been going on for quite a while now and are suspected to be either drug related, the 'escorting' of illegals into the country, or both.

Now for pp.

Armed troops entering the country have a name. It's called an invasion. Now, I'm sure that they were not acting under the orders of Mexico City, but Presidente Fox is responsible and has not responded in a positive manner to this situation. Bush is well within diplomatic decorum to refuse a 'face to face' untill either action of some substance is taken by Mexico City, or Fox responds in more than a cavelier fashion to this.

By breaking of the news that the Border Patrol agent was fired upon by the Mexican Army while they were on US soil, the press may have actually aggravated a situation that was being handled 'private channel'.

Ishmael

Exactly! There's a whole multitude of things that he should be doing before "End of Spring-Break" trips to Mexico to watch sporting events with his buddies.

Yes I suppose so. But do you think he'll ever have time to get around to them.

After all he's so busy hunting bin Laden that he barely had time to attend a fundraising gala with GlaxoSmithKlein, Pfizer, and Bayer and Merk.

'And that after the passage of a senior citizens' prescription package that hugely favours drug companies and can be interpreted as penalising pensioners'.

Now back to these 'armed incursions'...

More than that. He should declare war. Right now. This instant. Or has he become a pussy cat now that he's discovered the world doesn't dance to his tune.

Damned media.

It's a pity it isn't as public spirited as yourself and at least keep this secret to itself.

Well done.

Hey, it was already reported. Not my fault if others don't read the press.

Besides, G. W. didn't consult me. I send him e-mails, but he never calls. What's up with that?

Armed Incusions

That was awhile ago, like four to six months’ back.
What it was about was the Tijuana drug Cartel put a bounty on the heads of the Border patrol and anyone who killed one would be offered a reward proportional to the agents rank.

So the corrupt Mexican military (or a least a corrupt unit of the dilapidated army) took up the hunt! Two Mexican military trucks (big Duece-and-a-halfs) crossed to border into Texas chasing two border agents who ultimately got away (luckily). The trucks were laden with two squads of soldiers so we are talking about 20 to 25 troops all firing away with rifles and fully-automatic weapons at out federal border patrol agents on our own sovereign country.

I think the Mexican Central Command as subsequently dealt with them as even they are not dumb or crazy enough to go to war with us (hell, they don't even have any tanks in their arsenal, what chance would they have other than small-unit guerilla tactics unable to sustain losses or hold captured territory)? Truth be told if Cuba had a land border with Mexico even they could annex it as a “Greater Kuba” is they so desired the conquest. lol

The truth of the matter pp_man is sorry, we just don't give a shit about soccer here in the US other than as an occasional mild curiosity in between the seasons of out favored American Sports.

Now that's a reply which most people can agree with.

Far more plausible than 'armed incursions' into America. :)

Soccer just ain't your game...

Your team done well though.

Diplomats don't have a 'favorite' sport. Do they pp?

Hey! Diplomats are people too! :D

What do you think they were before they became diplomats, clones in some gigantic secret facility where they are genetically engineered for deception and spewing bullshit on Larry King Live? No, most of them were Average Americans like you or me (ok, average Americans with six-figure incomes or larger-that's true for both parties pp_man). lol

You continue to respond to p_p_man's little jabs. If i were the President, i wouldn't call anyone in that category. either.

Look, if the President asked me to watch soccer with him, I'd decline! I don't like soccer, rugby, polo, or cricket. We have Football, Baseball, and Basketball. The President ran a major league baseball team, that's where his passion lies, his choice! To slam him or his policies is a vain attempt at yellow journalism(the Observer), there is more substantial points to his presidency to criticize than not wanting to see a nothing soccer match!
Keep looking! :D
