I've been a motorcyclist for over 22 years. In that time I've been hit by a car once, about 6 years ago, and I've hit the ground doing better than 60 mph on 3 occasions. Up until 10 months ago, I always managed to get up and ride away from the wrecks, broken bones and all. Last August I hit spilled fuel in a turn and brought my total of crashes faster than 60 mph to 4. This last time, I was 100 miles from home when the bike hit a rock and was too bent to ride. I ended up with a bone graft to repair my broken (for the 3rd time) collarbone.
I was right back on the bike, with a busted up shoulder, as soon as I got it back from the shop. I was riding 7 days after the surgery. But since then I've stayed close to home. Today I got on the bike and took the same ride that ended in my last crash. I rode carefully past the spot where I crashed, and I was free! I visited my favorite sportbike hangouts, and on the ride home I passed the crash site, hard on the gas and loving life! I put in 3 and a half hours of saddle time and I covered 244 miles through rolling hills, mountain switchbacks, and flat out running through the desert. I am restored!
Some folks are never the same after a bad wreck. I beat my demon today. I am a hardcore motorcyclist again! I don't expect everybody to care, but the bikers out there will understand.
