Down here in Tennesse, it is common place to hear about the latest scare, right here in my state. I just turn on the news for the weather anymore. All it does is scare the shit out of the people, and I for one would not like to be scared anymore, or try to explain to my little brother why this is all happening.
It sucks, and after the weather, I pop in a movie, or continue to read my book. Usually takes my mind off things like that.
I was really pleased, disconnected, free, over the weekend. Now I'm back to constant news, just read tomorrow's Wall St. Journal & NY Times on the web, no good news really. I can't help but feel that something more terrible will happen soon enough. Still, I read and I read. I just don't feel so great.
One consolation: Advertisers, even car dealers, are canceling ads in the NY Post because the paper ran a cartoon that showed the owner of the Daily News sending anthrax to the Post. More shite from Fox "News."
I'm pretty maxed out on all of it - the WTC digging, the anthrax stuff, all of it. It exhausts me, it depletes me, it takes more than i have left, caring so very much about it everyday, day after day, no letup in sight. The fires of outrage have burned low in me, suffocating without sufficient air to keep them roaring at peak heat - and i don't care. I have two relatives still in the WTC, someplace, and that still hurts but not so terribly sharply, so painfully, like at first.
One cannot go forever on the adrenaline rush of anger and fear and outrage. We need normalcy and stretches of mundane reality and giddy rushes of pleasure, too, we frail humans.
I'm with you, Siren. I'm depleted. I wish the People In Charge would tell the news people who would tell me what to watch out for, and i'd watch out for it. Otherwise, i wish they'd all just leave me alone about the bad stuff.
I can't stand to watch it either. But I have to for my job. My students are watching the news at home for the first time in their lives. They come in every day with questions and want me to explain what they saw or heard.
I think the media in general is over playing the anthrax scare. It is something they can report on. They are being shut out of the doings overseas.
What scares me more is the bill that was passed yesterday. Does anyone really understand the powers given to our government by the terrorist bill? Bad stuff.
According to the media, the guy who said it was using a cell phone. When it was time to put the plan for disrupting the hijackers into action, he put the phone down on the seat so the operator on the other end of the line could still hear what was being said. His wife said "let's roll" was something her husband said all the time.
Don't know why that appeared as unregistered - but that was me... took 10 whole minutes just to get the post to stick and then it didn't have my name on it... *sigh*
Thick letters from unknown sources. Particularly ones that are wrapped in tape or string.
Watch for thick envelopes that have greasy looking moisture spots on it. Like when you have some italian dressing on a napkin.
If an envelope is leaking white powder, don't touch it. Don't touch anything else with your hands that can get away with not touching. Get something, preferably plastic, and cover it up along with the full container or area that it's in. Wash your hands thoroughly. Clear out the vicinity and call 911. Do not let anyone near it, nor should you go back to it.
Now, the chances of you getting anthrax in the mail is very low. You're just as likely to catch it from licking the grass in a sheep pasture.
The worst part of all of this is the helplessness. I've stopped watching the news. I get a daily dose at cnn.com and that's the end of it. Too much of this news is very depressing, angering, and panic-inducing.
