So, I've been trying to figure it out for years. I know breasts are amazing, I have them, but I don't know why guys like them. At least I get to use them all the time. And what about butts? They have pretty much one of the least glamorous jobs of the entire body. So, what is it about them that makes you take a second look?

I guess there's a few reasons why I like breasts. For a start, they're a body part that I don't have, so if I get an opportunity to play with somebody else's, then I'm not going to pass that up

Breasts are inherently interesting I think due to breastfeeding.
It's not that grown men want to breastfeed (well, some of them do, but they are weird), it's just an implanted memory of something intimate between you and a female (your mother).
They have also been sexualized for so long, and treated as sexual organs, that enjoying breasts is a learned thing.
When you're a pubescent boy and watching all these girls in your school start to develop breasts, then realize that adults have made them taboo to look at or girls to show you, and they are sensative to the touch for a girl, new to pubescent girls, it just gives you further interest.

As for ass, that's probably also instinctual.
Wide hips (and therefor a bigger ass) is an indicator of fertility, at least it was seen that way in ancient times. The wide hips are historically known as better for childbirth, which is the instinctual purpose of sex.
Later on, when sex was done more for pleasure than just procreation, the ass became taboo and exciting.

Culture has evolved the enjoyment of both big boobs and a big ass from primal urges to objects of sexual desire.

I could be way off base here, but that's my best assumption.

I think EctoJohn has the gist of it. Presumably there's some sort of biological programming that draws men to be attracted to women with certain physical characteristics, and presumably this is as a proxy for fertility.

Now obviously the exact shapes don't present that strong of a drive/compulsion, because the fashion industry & others have been able to sidetrack that and change the body types that are viewed as 'most attractive'. Also, if we went around without clothes all the time, it'd probably be even less strong (but hey, I'm just guessing).

So I think it's a socialized fetishization of women's body parts driven by residual puritanism held over from the Victorian Era and hijacked by commercialism overlaid on an innate biological method of evaluating fertility.

I think it all comes down to fertility cues. Men who were pre-programmed to prefer women with these cues were more likely to pass on their genes, so those preferences flourished in the subsequent generations (i.e., us).

The round ass is obvious: breeding hips, good for birthing. Breasts, I think, are a transference: a nice round pair with deep cleavage looks a lot like a nice round ass, and stirs the same instincts in a man.

Well, I think it was a great question and deserves more than ONLY 'I think,' or 'I guess...'

The idea of really wanting to remove the mystery is well-made, though, and I can understand that to a large extent, because too much 'understanding' may get in the way of undiluted appreciation.

But I still think the question is too important to just let it go - in a place dedicated to erotica - at what comes across to me as casual, minimalistic, even gratuitous, answers. Well, I understand where you all are coming from, in general. I was curious about personal motivations too. And, if at all possible, I'd like perspectives from both sexes. I mean, I have spent years trying to figure out what, exactly, inspires a response of "cute butt" when a guy walks by. Maybe he has nice jeans? (Good denim can do wonders. Or maybe that's just me. )

So, let's go with the pre-programming, biological whatever. I get that, but how do we then account for the variation in preferences? There are some who would turn their nose up at a set of large breasts, and those who would do the same for small ones. And yeah, society has definitely influenced that, but it didn't just come from nowhere. Someone, somewhere had to decide they liked smaller breasts, or something like that. And enough people had to be convinced, otherwise he or she would be dismissed as a deviant.


What about butts? I would like to iterate the point that they do disgusting things. Fascinating things (if you're a scientist), but disgusting nevertheless. Do we get turned on by Rafiki's butt? (He's a baboon, for anyone who missed out on childhood and joy) And again, the question of the wide variation of preference arises. I've also heard "I dunno, because it's squishy." Then why aren't we driven to erotic madness by the prevalence of squishy bellies and wiggly thighs?

So, grand theories are welcome, but I'd also like to hear personal experiences.
