I am the flag of the United States of America.
My name is Old Glory.
I fly atop the world's tallest buildings.
I stand watch in America's halls of justice.
I fly majestically over institutions of learning.
I stand guard with power in the world.
Look up ... and see me.
I stand for peace, honor, truth and justice.
I stand for freedom.
I am confident.
I am arrogant.
I am proud.
When I am flown with my fellow banners,
my head is a little higher,
my colors a little bit truer.
I bow to no one!
I am recognized all over the world.
I am cherished - I am saluted.
I am loved - I am revered.
I am respected -- and I am feared.
I have fought in every battle of every
war for more then 200 years.
I was flown at Valley Forge, Gettysburg,
Shiloh and Appomattox.
I was there at San Juan Hill,
the trenches of France,
in the Argonne Forest, Anzio, Rome
and the beaches of Normandy, Guam.
Okinawa, Korea and KheSan, Saigon,
Vietnam know me,
I was there.
I led my troops,
I was dirty, battle-worn and tired,
but my soldiers cheered me
And I was proud.

I have been burned, torn and trampled
on the streets of countries I have helped set free.
It does not hurt, for I am invincible.
I have been soiled upon, burned, torn
and trampled on the streets of my country.
And when it's by those whom I've served in battle -
it hurts.
But I shall overcome - for I am strong.
I have slipped the bonds of Earth
and stood watch over the uncharted
frontiers of space from my vantage point
on the moon.
I have borne silent witness
to all of America's finest hours.
But my finest hours are yet to come.
When I am torn into strips
and used as bandages
for my wounded comrades on the battlefield,
When I am flown at half-mast to honor my soldier,
Or when I lie in the trembling arms
of a grieving parent
at the grave of their fallen son or daughter,
I am proud.

MY NAME IS OLD GLORY
LONG MAY I WAVE.
DEAR GOD IN HEAVEN
LONG MAY I WAVE

"In the beginning, all the world was America."
-John Locke, 17th Century

Our company bought flags for each employee in our office today. Every office, every cubicle. Most people put their flag on the ledge above their work space, so that the flags can be seen throughout the office at a glance. Of all the decorations we've had over the years for various holidays, none were ever so beautiful as the sight of the office full of flags.

The verse above was also sent to each employee by email.

Damnit Cheyenne i had pretty much managed to keep from crying untill i read that. My eyes had gotten wattery and I had been on the brink but that really put me into full blown tears.

That was a damn fine poem though.

I heard this on Delilah tonight. She read it on the air. Choked me up then, too. :(

great poem, Cheyenne; belatedly - to all my American friends - my thoughts and consolation, from a now very occasional visitor to the BB...

love

Golden! I know, I'm behind on email again. :(

Good to hear from you. I remember being so worried about you not so long ago when London was under attack with those damn car bombs. I never thought that the U.S. A. would be attacked and it would be us I needed to worry about!

A truly magnificent rendition.
Even though I am English, I find the expressions of pride that Americans have for their country wonderfully moving.

I can think of no words that fit how I feel. Nor descriptions of feelings that would help.

I can only Salute, smile, and cry. For Not even the Elves could find a saying suitable to do that poem justice.

Bravo.

shameless *bump* to the top.

If I thought there were flags in our office yesterday, I should have waited until this morning! The building owner added flags to the atrium, above the elevator doors, and all along the front walk to the parking lot. Our own office added a HUGE flag at the front entrance way- it must be 5 feet by 10 or 12 feet.

I've never seen so many flags before.

Today...

The mail delivered two large flags to our house.

My son had bid on one on ebay two weeks ago and was beaten out at the last minute. We found two more and this time our bids won. This was before the events of Tuesday. He wanted it to put on his wall. It covers damn near the whole thing! It's 5'x 9'8"

Why two..one (his) is a fifty star and the other is a forty eight star configuration. Thought it might be nice to have one from a time before even I was born. It is the same size...both are heavy cotton canvas.

Got em cheap too!

I work as the manager of a floral dept. at a large grocery store chain. We have been inundated with people wanting bows, ribbons, red white and blue carnations - anything to show their patriotism and pride in their country, as flags were sold out by early Wednesday in all area stores. I dug around and found several rolls of ribbon that looks just like Beebeeblue's avatar, and made up lapel pins just like her avatar to give out to all the customers. I put baskets of these at all the checkout counters. Soon word got around town that we were doing this, and people from other businesses were coming in, asking that we make up ribbons for their employees. I have no idea how many thousands of ribbons me and my crew made today, I only know that it was the first time that long hours and no lunch break felt damn good.

God bless America.

That was before Tuesday when the flag market took a slight jump in value, I think. I'd be curious what the flags are selling for on ebay now compared to BEFORE the attack.

Good timing though on your son's part.

Cheyenne is right are the American flags dearer than they were?
Not that it matters in econmic terms eg supply versus demand = a higher price :)

Cheyenne

It was good timing..and it sorta made me feel good that he wanted an American flag for his wall, before Tuesday even:D

These flags retail(B4 9/11) for upwards of $60.

He got it for $23...

Not that the cost is important....the item bought is priceless.
