1/2 of marriages end in divorce.

Why do they say this? Because somebody one year looked and saw something like this:

2000:
Marriages: 100000
Divorces: 50000
OMG THE NUMBER IS HALF THEFROE HALF OF ALL MARrAIGES ARE ENDING IN DIVORCE

never mind that there were millions and millions more marriages before the new 100k or so marriages.

Do you really think that's how they calculate those stats? LOL

They use prospective cohort studies - follow a population through time. Believe me, the methodology is a bit more complex than you give it credit for.

I've heard two different stats on this: 1) the divorce rate is 50% and 2) 50% of marriages don't last 3 years.

Not sure how they would measure #1, unless they figure out the total marriages at any one moment in time and then figure out how many of those end up divorced by the end of the year.

#2 is pretty easy to measure as long as you keep track of marriages.

Either way... I believe the divorce rate is high, no matter what the actual number is... and that the chances of staying in a marriage longer than 5 years are against you.

I would actually like to see the stats for when divorces occur. example, XX% of divorces occur in year 1. XX% of divorces occur year in year 2. Etc.

And you'd think this would be very easy to collect, since all marriages have to go thru the state, same with divorces. It should be all computerized... just gotta plug the numbers into a excel spreadsheet. LOL
