Thanks JayZip, you nailed it! I am surprised it's the Richard Gerald story about the boxing math professor. I only read it once and would never have suspected it to be the one I was looking for. Oh well.

I love how he almost kills the lawyer, with disdainful ease; and then a little later the wife thinks to herself how stupid she was, saying (something like) "and he put me right in my place with his email reply".

Richard Gerald changes tone midway thru, turning it into a sort of comedy. He's a great enough writer that we accept it. But on re-read, I always wonder how it would go if the wife had to work a little harder. Maybe move across country to chase him because he's taken a high-power position at, like, Stanford. I imagine the daughter (the one who's biologically his) saying something to the wife like, "Mom you know he's one of the smartest men in the country, right? He's never looked at you critically because he loved you. But now that he's looking, it's gonna take him about 10 seconds to figure out EVERYTHING. Like, that my sister isn’t his. You're totally fucked."

I agree whole-heartedly. RichardGerald wrote some of the best stories here, but one can't help but wish that some of them had just a little more bite.
