Hurt my back and had to leave the job

I did one of those incredibly stupid things that I seem to do once a decade or so-- The kind of thing you keep telling other people not to do, and then finally you demonstrate why not.

FIVE GALLON BUCKETS ARE NOT SAFE TO STAND ON!

I've known this forever. So I don't want to admit that i was standing on one... but I was. And it flipped over and dumped me on my butt.
I couldn't land straight because I was sideways against a wall. And I am not in the best shape of my life anyways... So I shocked both of the long muscles in my back, my butt is a bit sore, I enjoyed a moment of complete disorientation since it's been so long that I've fallen or tumbled or any physical thing.

Once I stopped hyperventilating, I got myself rolled up in a ball to keep my back stretched, and my coworker got me a big bag of ice. Three Tylenol later, I was pain-free enough to drive the 45 minute land route from Westwood to my neighborhood in East L.A.-- With two pounds of ice melting down my spine..

My spine is uninjured, and I am still icepacking. I really think that the drive helped, actually-- kept me just mobile enough. Most of the pain is gone as long as I don't move too fast and make something twinge. But I know how much it will hurt tomorrow...

Ice and ibu and lots of rest.

No sex for you for awhile.

Take care of you.

I've always been told to alternate ice & heat. I know for my back and knees, it's what works best. You need to keep some flexibility (although I'd be careful about any stretching), or it'll be even worse. Good luck, back things are the worst (mine take two days to flare up, then stay with me for at least a week). :rose:

Ouch! My sympathies.

Been there. Done that.

Try Hot and Cold Packs, they work great.

Hope you feel better soon. :)

I hope you'll feel better soon. :rose:

Hugs might hurt, so I'll just leave  's for you.

Also lifting two 15 pound bowling balls over your head really fast is not a good idea.

Get better soon!!!

Thank you all

I'm sitting up and walking around-- gingerly and trying real hard to stay loose.

I've told the kids that they have to take over my chores... heheh...

Ouch, I know the feeling, and it isn't a good one. I hope you get better without any long term consequences.

Poor thing! Stay off your back, (or should it be stay on your back?) for a while. Have a glass of wine to go with those painkillers and tell those kids to get moving! Hope you feel better :rose:

Well at least one good thing has come out of this. :D

My director told me to use three Advil and it worked wonders when I threw my back out. That and staying off my feet.

And, needless to say...

One of my cats seems to be ill. He wouldn't come to dinner, just sat out in the cane thicket meowing piteously. Guess who had to walk into the brush pick him up to carry him in? He won't let either of the kids carry him.

He really is sick, too- I offered him human tuna and he lapped some of the water and wouldn't take any more. He's been like this for three days now... :(

Stella, I hope that you are feeling better - and I'd pop kitty over to the vet pronto. Rotten luck you're having. :( I hope the best for both of you.

I hate having accidents on the job. The worst part, to me, is explaining what happened to the HR folk. I always feel like such an ass, usually because I have been one.

What I have always heard is no heat for the first twenty-four hours. That is what the athletic trainers always said -- of course, that was a long time ago --

No, that's right.

Ice the first 24-48 hours to reduce swelling.

Then heat to promote circulation and ease soreness.

Stella, sorry to hear about your kitty, too.

Can anyone else take kitty to the vet?
