"Welcome to hell you rat bastard." - anonymous

Brevity being the soul of wit, and all that, this guy's even briefer. The soul of half-wit, then, perhaps.

Aren't people nice?

Max,

Makes you wonder whether getting feedback is worthwhile or not, here's one I got today - positive or negative I am confused.

"This message contains feedback for: jon.hayworth
About the submission: Absolution For Sister Angel
This feedback was sent by: Anonymous

Comments:

Well written but boring... I am not going to vote because I couldn't finish it."

So whoever it was they did not like it - but why anonymous.

C' est la vie

Nil illigitimo carborundum keep on writing!

jon

I agree, that doesn't seem to make much sense Jon. If it was so boring that he or she couldn't be bothered to vote (and by all means, if it was that boring, go ahead and give a low vote, right?) then why waste time sending a feedback?
It's discouraging to get feedback that doesn't really help too.. for example wouldn't you like to know what that person found so boring?

Our anonymous friends.

With seventy-two stories posted, I receive several e-mail a week from readers. Most are very nice. It is interesting to imagine what kind of person sent each one.

There are two anonymous senders of interest, because they never change their pattern. One will pick out a misspelled word, or the incorrect use of a verb to rant about. His note will end, "Got it stupid."

The other will only make a statement such as, "You are stupid and presumptuous to think that you are a writer."

When he writes to me, I know that whatever story that he has singled out for that day will have received two (1) votes. In the last three weeks, he has lowered the scores of all my stories listed in the "Romance" top story listing.

Funny, but neither ever directs me to a story that he has written.
I wonder why?

Ahh, Softly, I guess I'm not the only one with Anti-Fans.

I only hear from mine right after I post a new story, but then I don't have as many stories up as you do. Maybe they are trying to get caught up with all your stories. Since they must have someone else read the stories to them, illiterates can't read, it could take them a while.

By the way, I get the "got it stupid" feedback too, suppose it's the same guy?

So whenever one of my "Anti-fans" sends me a hateful message I just dig through my archives of "fan" mail. There are a few in particular that I read over and over again to help re-overinflate my ego. :)

Someone wrote to me about how ugly the back of my head was

I don't find that totally appropriate...

I have to admit I love calling people who piss me off "rat bastards", but it annoys me that trolls are using it.

I feel so illiterate now.

After posting that previous message I'm afraid that someone will think that I have done the dirty to someone. Believe me, I have not. I have never voted below a three, and I've never sent a feedback without my email. I find that both cheap and cowardly.

I have had a couple of these trolls you call them that send feedback as well. I only have a few stories up so I suppose I am not in the limelight as much as some of you. But I agree that it is pure cowardess. Because if someone actually sent me negative feedback WITH an address I would email them back to ask why.
My last one was something along the lines of

Clever title, rotten story -

nothing as to why. After the first one I got a half dozen that were good so I chalked it up to not being able to please everyone all the time and moved on.

"Who the fuck do you think you are?"

I think I am a writer, therefore I have the capacity not only to think but to express my thoughts verbally. I think that I have an excellent command of the English language and I think that my personal standards for writing are higher than 90% of all who put pen to paper. I think that my enjoyment of the well-written word is immeasurable, and I think that when I say "using the word 'snatch' makes you sound like a giggling, wide-eyed, idiotic junior high kid," I am not far from the mark.

Sorry, I've been keeping THAT one bottled up for two months now.

I recieved my very first negative feed back today, it simply read as follows.

"Learn to write...Dickhead"

So here is my response.

Dickhead, ah I did it. lol

Ahem... since you metioned the back of your head - it took me some time to understand what that pic was all about. At first, I thought you were half-bald... lol :D
DP.

I've just recieved another one, I assume from the same person because only someone with limited intelligence would bother with this shit. lol

He/she wrote: Ewww yuck, ratbastard! That was gross !

He/she was referring to a story called 'Watching' so could anyone who has half a brain check this tale out for me and tell me what you think in all honesty.

Thx

Carl

I'm sensing a theme here

I just got feedback that said "ratbastard you have way too much freetime on your hands."

The plot thickens...

Okay, I read it through and didn't find anything "yucky" or "gross". The only thing I can think of is that there was something in particular that this person found disturbing. Some folks just can't stomach anal sex or non-consent or incest. That is simply the reader's preference and should really be no reflection on the writer, in my opinion.

Still scratching my head, trying to figure out what this person found so unappealing.

Thank you SexyChele for taking the time to read it, it's appreciated. I guess I just needed to hear from someone else objectively, so that others who recieve this kind of pap, will realise, MORONS do exist. lol

I have not submitted any stories to Literotica, but all I can say is that if I am reading a story, and I don't like the author's voice, or if I'm just not into the story, (what I am about to share is very dangerous as it requires common sense and an ounce of politeness) I simply close the story. I find something else. Why bitch about it to the author? I wouldn't care if someone disliked something I had written. The only time I ever write to authors is if I enjoyed their story. People can be so petty.

I can appreciate what you are saying about not liking a story. Before I submitted stories to Lit, I would do the same thing. "Back" out of the story, or simply say to myself, "Well, didn't care for that one!" Never thought to contact the author.

However, once I started to submit stories, my attituded changed. Sure, like everyone else, I love feedback that says, "The story was great", "I really enjoyed it because of __________." Always flatters the ego! ;)

But I have come to appreciate responses from people who didn't like the stories and who can say exactly what it was they didn't like. No, you don't have to be proficient in grammar or spelling or anything like that. Sometimes just telling an author that you didn't like the main character because <insert reason> is appreciated. Yes, I write for my own satisfaction. But I am always looking for way to improve. I don't expect my readership to be highly skilled in the English language - heck, I'm not! :) But, also being a reader, I know what I like and what I don't. And sharing that with, say me, helps me to take a look at what I'm writing and make it better.

I almost (that's almost!) like the constructive criticism better than the praise, as I feel that person is truly trying to help me, by giving me their opinion. And, as long as it is constructive, they will always receive a "thank you" from me. Without that, we writers would simply continue in our same old writing habits rather than grow and develop.

Just thought I'd share again. I received another troll message about this same story from what has to be the same troll.

"Your story still sucks"

Okay, but my thoughts...

If it really sucked so bad why'd you read it twice? lol some people slay me.

If the story has merit, and the author displays enough ability and effort to make it worth their while to cultivate, I usually respond.

I start, typically, mentioning what I did like about the story. There must be something, see previous paragraph.

Then, I comment upon whatever seemed weak to me, be it: plot, character motivation, internal logic (especially in sci-fi and fantasy). I do not usually comment about proofing, spelling, or grammar - because it would be too much like the pot calling the kettle ... But, what I notice of these, are factored into what was covered in the first paragraph.

Even when I - occasionally - find a perfect gem, I try to analyse the story, telling the author what I got out of their story. It may not be what the author meant. That may be their fault, or my faulty understanding. At least they know whether the idea they tried to communicate, got through - enjoyable, or not.

Telling someone you like, or dislike, an authors work, without explaining what you understood of their story, and why you liked, or disliked it, is nearly worthless to the author.

Except for ego stroking. :) [If it's an "Attaboy!"]

Quasi.
