I'm curious- are any of you deer hunters? Any of you getting that itchy trigger finger, patiently waiting for the season to open? (No, I'm not a hunter myself. At least not of deer. ;) )

my hubby is a hunter and there is nothing patient about him when he is waiting on hunting season. *grin*

I have hunted deer, but not this year, to much going on, dang it..lol

But i do have the itch...

I used to be,,, not only was it a means of providing necessary meat for the winter, but I actually enjoyed it,,, the solitude in an autumn or winter forest, the very basicness if it, and the thrill of the accomplishing something by myself,,,

Then one day in 1988 a good friend that I was hunting with was shot to death ( yes, we both had MORE than the required amount of blaze orange displayed ) by a tresspasser on my grandparents land. At that point I realized that you could die from this sport through no fault of your own.

Haven't taken up a gun to hunt with since,,, oh, I shot a rattlesnake once that refused to leave my front yard,,, but no more hunting for this boy. And, yes, I miss it.

I'm sorry to here about your friend CW.. that would be a hard thing to get over.

I can understand your feelings.

I am and have been an avid bow hunter and bow fisher for a long time. I use the very basics of the bow, no sights and pulleys and such for me. It is a lot of fun for me and the gun hunters aren't out when we are so I find it a little safer ;). I won't get a chance to go this year with the job and trying to make babies and all. I'll miss it, hell I already do. Did.

I took down a pretty good buck three years ago with my Mercury. Here in Indiana, the deer are such a pest that responsible hunters are a godsend.

I still remember the story though of the little island in some river(Allegheny?) in Pennsylvania where there was no hunting for several years and the deer overran it. Finally, the state issued some special permits for a one day hunt but no one thought to have the hunters start from the same side of the island. The net effect was chaos. I remember this one guy that got interviewed after he was shot. Turns out he realized what was going wrong and tried to climb a tree to a deer stand but got shot on the way up about 10 feet off the ground.

Today is opening day of the Vermont hunting season. Normally I would have been out at the crack of dawn in search of the wiley whitetail, but a bum knee has slowed me down a little bit this year. Maybe next weekend!

I don't hunt too much. I did go out last year and get myself a decent four horn. We've got one roaming around the farm that has to be at least a 12 point, a rarity in these parts who I would love to bag on of these days.

Oh, and I only eat what I hunt, not for sport.

A couple of weeks ago a bow hunter in Indiana was accidentally killed by his father. They were apparently out before sunrise and for some reason there is no requirement to wear orange during bow season.

A couple of years ago I was driving to Virginia. Couldn't believe how many people were hunting in W. VA. Campsites alongside of the road and people everywhere! And on a school day! Found out later that it's like a state holiday the first week of hunting season. School is out and everybody hunts.

I couldn't get through there quick enough and was sure glad that I have a red car. Do you know how difficult it is to drive with your head barely above the steering wheel??

Sonora,,, back in the early 70's when I was finishing high school, the first day of bow hunting and rifle season for deer WAS a day that school was closed. And during the spring gobbler (turkey) season, anyone could miss two days without a note or penalty. And now teacher workshops are scheduled for those days,,, so school is still out.

Even now, there are small and even some mid sized businesses here abouts that close for the ENTIRE first week of rifle deer season,,, quite often they hire a temp. to just answer the phones,,, no business transactions at all that week.

I filled my doe tag on Oct 14th, my hunting partner filled his on Oct 7th. Mule deer season is nearly over here in Nevada.

I can relate!

I know what you are talking about there CW!

9 years ago,I was hunting in a field on my grandpa's farm.I was walking down a fence line, heading back to the woods.I heard a shot, then a couple of seconds later,I felt the BB's starting to hit me,and the gound around me.

Luckily,I was far enough away, that the shot had lost it's punch. And your only aloud to hunt with a shotgun here in the lower half of Michigan.

I still hunt with a bow,and 22 or 4-10 for small game, but no more gun season for deer for me.And I still take a week off work, and go to deer camp, but I stay at the camp and cook, with the older guys, and keep the tabs on the beer supply.(Every once in a while,I'll have to drink one, just to make sure it isn't spoilled!")

But to all you other hunters:GOOD LUCK & BE SAFE!

Firearms deer season opened here on Friday. I hunted Friday and Saturday. It is illegal to hunt on Sunday in Delaware, so back to it on Monday. I took a week of vacation for the season, as always. No luck as yet, to much wind with a front coming through.

Hi...

Yes...I hunt...I am a woman but, don't hold that against me. I haven't hunted in the last two years but, I do enjoy it. Our season is over with but, my honey got his deer. Of the 12 years that I have hunted I've gotten 11 deer. So I don't aim to badly.

The one thing I like about hunting season is my honey in his jeans, deer hunting boots, plaid flannel shirt, and OMG the suspenders! I love the suspenders...it's hard to get started hunting when I just wanna attack him. LOL! Is it getting hot in here...or is it just me! Whew...I need a fan!

Let's just say I like you men dressed up in your macho hunting clothes so if you see a woman running towards you with a gun, in the woods,(and yes I know you aren't to run with a gun) no I am not going to shoot, I am just gonna hold you hostage and have my way with you! ;) I don't mind if you struggle makes it feel so much better ;)

CW, I am sorry to hear of your experience! That would be so hard to get over!!

hunting those poor harmless wittle cweatures?? Tut ut.

If you must roam the countryside toting a gun and it's not the season for paedophiles, why not at least do something socially useful and hunt pests ...? potential presidential candidates spring to mind ...

Not nearly as tasty as a venison steak.
