Humungus

Is a word I often read descriving size of many things.

But there is no mentioning of the word humungus in my Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary.

Maybe it's not humungus enough.

Had I gotten the spelling wrong?

Yes, it's humongous, not that I've actually seen it. :p

hu·mon·gous (hy-mnggs, -mng-) or hu·mun·gous (-mng-)
adj. Slang
1. Extremely large; enormous: “humongous baked potatoes piled high with sour cream” (Boston Globe). 2. adj : (used informally) very large; "a thumping loss" [syn: thumping, whopping, walloping]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Perhaps blend of huge, and monstrous or tremendous.]

Thanks.

I keep seeing misspelled words all over on Lit and get confused as I'm not perfect on spelling meself.

Do you think it's something clinically wrong (in a medical sense).

I got thinking, and I came up with an idea that it's to do with words such as 'fungus', 'mushroom', 'cockhead'.

Do you think I'm turning gay?

The word cockhead do not exist in dictionary.

But, you may use 'cock head' or 'cock-head'.

Cock-a-doodle-doo!

Actually the OED gives humungous as an acceptable alternative spelling.

It does? Oh, ok.

I never bothered to look it up, just stated it as I knew it was spelled.

Humongous or humumgous, either case, I can't find it in my dictionary. Not humungus enough.

I found fungus in my dictionary. Perhaps you meant fungus.

I always though humongous was strictly a pseudoword or slang. Same with bodacious and hellacious. Now I see that they're all in the dictionary.

Another was 'nugatory', which I now find is an old and legitimate word meaning trifling or of no consequence.

Live and burn.
