Humanity

Are there decisions you are faced with everyday that make you feel like you lose a chunk of your humanity? Is there an occasion on a semi-regular basis where you have to turn your face and be cold or cynical in order to cope but at the same time you deny your human reaction?

Are we encouraged to suck up our humanity as adults? Is that what being an adult is?

Am I making sense?

You're making sense, but I rarely have to do any of that. I think it's more about life style choices than adulthood.

Sometimes we just have to pull our heads in and get on with life.... but without hurting others along the way...

Sometimes we can not change the world and have to do what we can. :)

What sunstruck said.

Being an attorney will do that to you even more. Escape now, before it's too late! :D

you are making sense.

i think it depends on the choices you make about the way you live your life. i can not think of any decision that i've had to make that made me feel that way. i treat people with respect and offer them the benefit of the doubt. that saves me a lot of energy.

Makes perfect sense to me. Just another routine day on the job. :(

Well, certainly not daily decisions..but there have been times in life that I've had to do things that I didn't think were "humane," but in my heart, I knew it was the right thing to do. And no, I'm not talking about putting your pet to sleep or something like that.

I've always put other people ahead of me..up until very recently, when I learned that it's okay to take care of yourself..do things that make you feel good.

As far as being cold and cynnical .vs. feeling what's beneath the surface..I get that every day. Sometimes it's so hard not to dog people who dog me. And I know exactly what to say to make them hurt as much as they make me hurt...but I never do it..never say it. That's why I was always made fun of..cuz I never fought back. I guess I'm a pacifist for life. Heh.

I think every parent knows what it is to swallow their anger or hide their amusement to avoid "giving the kid the wrong idea."

I think your question is a bit confusing. Ther have been times in my life when I have needed to put on a "face" that didn't reflect my "humanity" -- staying "strong and controlled" when my eldest daughter had open-heart surgery at age 6 was one of the hardest things I've ever done. Luckily that isn't something that has been "semi-regular" in my life.

I think that all of us have to act logically when our emotions want us to run screaming or throw things -- in that repect, being "adult" does mean "denying your human reaction."
