Hugo Chavez has died.

Yet another blow to you and your kind.

I'm just afraid little Venice will go back to the way it was when it was a private cash pit for corporations and the wealthy.

Didn't much like him, but the neocon attempt to turn him into America's new public enemy #1 was way the fuck over the top.

He wouldn't suck US corporate cock and decided to spend the oil money on education and other benefits for the Venezuelan population. That scared the shit out of them.

Well this doesn't change my day one bit, but a hero to liberals is dead. Doesn't make it a bad day.

No surprise there.

The question is, will support of the regime continue without Chavez?

He must have known it was a possibility, he explicitly stated that he would like to see Maduro succeed him. I don't know enough about Venezuelan constitutional processes to know what happens next.

Whatever this "Bolivarian Revolution" of Chavez' is, the people have made clear repeatedly that they want it to continue. The question is whether that will remain true with no charismatic strongman leading it.

BBC says:

Struggling to hold back tears, Mr Maduro called on the nation to close ranks after their leader's demise.

He said the government had deployed the armed forces and police nationwide "to accompany and protect our people and guarantee the peace."

A statement by the military said it would protect the sovereignty, integrity and security of the country. It would remain loyal to the vice-president and to parliament, it added, urging people to remain calm.

Under the constitution, the head of Venezuela's Congress, Diosdado Cabello, will assume the interim presidency before an election is held.

This Cabello is of the same party as Chavez and Maduro, PSUV - (United Socialist Party of Venuezuela), so I don't foresee any conflict between them. Probably Cabello will endorse Maduro in the election. Probably Maduro will win in a free and fair election. And if it happens any other way, then we'll find out whether post-Chavez Venezuela really is a democracy or not.

The main opposition bloc is UNT (A New Era), center-left/social-democratic. Parties to the right of the center-left are pretty marginal in Venezuela.

A tin-pot dictator of a 3rd world shithole.

However, Venezuala actually has a chance, compared to most of it's neighbors. Too bad they completely squander their natural resources through corruption.
