So I ran across this article in the latest Good Housekeeping magazine while I was waiting at the dentist's office.
Apparently, the HPV test, when used in conjunction with the pap test provides nearly 100 % accuracy in predicting a woman's chances of developing cervical cancer within the three year time frame following the test. Yet according to the article, less than 15 % of ob/gyns are using it. One of the cons is that the HPV test is not covered by all insurance companies (IRC, only seven states specifically require coverage for HPV screening) and the test runs about $100. A little pricey, but maybe worth it if the test increases accuracy by that much of a margin.
Ladies, it might be time to do some research and initiate a conversation with your ob/gyn.
