...if "variations" of your story by other people started appearing on Literotica?

I've seen at least three obvious attempts to rip off my Humor and Satire story "Cindy Heller" here, all of them tedious and unfunny. I'm not sure whether to feel miffed or tickled pink.

I'd be thoroughly annoyed. If someone asked permission, then I'd probably grant without a second thought, but to do without asking is rude at best.

The Earl

I get the feeling that they may have thought-- "hey, that's a nice story, I think I'll write a story like that," like when you try to make the same meal that you just had in a restaurant or something. But I guess I am a bit miffed, becuase it's like I've done all the hard work, and they had a much easier job semi-plagiarising it.

I think I'd be both. I remember finding a story with the same name and theme as one of my stories, and I was pretty peeved. But at the same time, no one is going to come even remotely close to your telling of that story (which, I have to say, is one of my favorites here on lit) because it is so original, and thus, impossible to replicate.

I think it would depend on the story.

I have a couple here, my oldest ones, that I'd be glad to see someone rewrite. ;)

On the other hand, there are a couple of them that I'd be pissed off no end if they did that.

I'd be thrilled to tiny pieces.

I have to say that because I've ripped up no end of stories that started resembling Mayfair Lady.

Thank God the Book of Genesis is over 50 years old, so nobody is going to sue me over my latest effort, "It's a Begat-fest in Chaldea"

Yeah. In fact, your title brings up old memories. It hasn't happened here, but on another site, I can't count how many people tried to recreate the magic I put on the page with "The Erotic Adventures of Helen Keller." She stumbles and gropes her way into such mischeif in those. :D

Okay, I'm full of it. Go ahead and say it. It was tactless and it wasn't funny.

Bite me.

Actually I laughed. But I'd be glad to bite you anyway.

I'd be crazy pissed. I'm the jealous type when it comes to my ideas. Yeah, go ahead and make out with my boyfriend, but don't write a spin-off of Earth Day Field Trip or I'll cut ya.

(Scribbles down another entry under the category 'Things that will make MissScarlett hurt you)

Just in case I get suicidal again. ;)

Hahaha. Either that or you could come over hide all my pens, that too will get you murdered. :) Make sure to turn on QVC while you're at it.

I had such a gorgeous answer ... 3 hours AGO...before Lit went under ... I am left with asking how you are unique. I am certain I pointed out that you are not, and that you should not be upset because of some sort of Carl Jung Universal Unconsious thing mixed with really and a really great sense of humour.

You said you were wondering if you were gay, right?

:|

DAMN LIT! :(

:D

my tact...

is to make my stories uniquely weird, unusual, unexpected, down the road not taken. Good luck trying to imitate "The Worst Christmas Story Ever"!

Sack :D

immitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

have you contacted the culprits? i dunno if its worth it but if it brings you angst, then perhaps its a good idea.
you must fight for your beliefs, monkey boy.

That one I have to read.

If someone rips off your story and does a lousy job of it, you should feel flattered.

If someone rips you off, wins a contest, is contacted by a literary agent, is published, gets nominated for the Booker Prize, and eventually sells the screen rights, you should feel just godawful.

i so love your perspective.

I'd leave a comment: Wow, what a coincidence -- I wrote a similar story 3 weeks ago, Funny how more than one person comes up with the same idea, isn't it?

That happened to me, too. Same title, same Category, same spelling of the title .... It kind of bothered me, but I suppose I was just feeling possessive; and I ripped the title from a song, so what could I say?

As to how I would feel if someone ripped off my story, I would be upset; however, at the same time, I understand that there is very little that is truly an original take on something. We all borrow ideas from what we read/see/hear, whether we do consciously or subconsciously.

I think of Georgie Harrison and 'My Sweet Lord.' There are only so many notes, so many chords... you know the argument. But the written word, the story form, I think, is different. I'd be miffed more than flattered, sincerest form or no.
