How would you define sensuality?

What is sensuality to you? Like "porn" and "erotica" this word has different meanings to many people and does different things to different people.

I find that sensuality has more power to arouse me than porn does. I think it comes from the word sense, as in the sense of touch, sight, taste, smell, and hearing. It is subtle or overt. A finger tracing over a cheek during a bus ride, or a finger tracing over a nipple during sex. The scent of someone else's arousal, the feel of their heat, the taste of their skin, and the sounds of their moaning. This is more arousing to me than the thoughts of a penis plundering a vagina. I would find it more interesting to think about the feelings engendered by the thrusting than the thrusting itself.

I looked up the definition of the word for the fun of it and look what I found -

sen•su•al•i•ty (sRn1shá-^l2<=-tT) n. 1. The quality or state of being sensual or lascivious. 2. Excessive devotion to sensual pleasures.

Your little intro to the subject was delicious in the way I think about sensuality. How fascinating that the American Heritage Dictionary talks about "excessive devotion to sensual pleasures." Is that a reflection of our Puritan heritage or what?

I also think of the term in connection with my senses. Smell is such a powerful sense. I bet everyone can recall instantly the smell of the first rain when it falls on dirt. I have jasmine blooming next to the door of my cottage at the moment and walking past it in the evening when the aroma is most intense is a rare and wonderful delight. And who doesn't love the heady aroma of perspiration from a lover's body as you tumble together on rumpled sheets.

And taste. I'll relish an aged tawny port, or the liquid secretions when I kiss between my lover's thighs.

You're right KM, there are so many ways to think about and experience ourselves as sensualists. Mmm, mmm, mmm.

This should come as no surprise, but 'a few extra pounds'

Yeah, that's the way I have thought of it. Touches, smells, an all over comfy feeling that go straight from the fingers or nose or tongue to the lower brain, skipping that thinking part a the brain altogether.

Visual images can also be sensuous. One late night when I could not sleep, I turned on the tv and watched a piece of a movie. It was a scene with a man and a woman in the bedroom in the process of undressing each other.

The way the camera captured how they touched and moved was the most erotic I had ever seen. We never saw them naked or in bed and to this day the memory of that scene haunts me.

I wish I had caught the name of the movie to check it out again.
