Looking in my crystal ball I see the US closer to civil war than anytime since 1861.

The huge wedge is the economy. Things are going to Hell quickly. If it gets bad enough I imagine 2 minority groups will get scapegoated for it since they created the mortgage and credit crisis.

But there is also a culture war happening.

Gay marriage, capital punishment, arbortion, illegal immigration, affirmative action, etc. are hot button issues that dont improve with time.

My guess is New England, the Mid-Atlantic, the West Coast, and the Old Northwest states north of US 50 will form one nation, and the rest another.

You have proposed an interesting scenario, but the American people are too apathetic to get excited about economic problems. However, if Obama were to get assassinated, we would undoubtedly see a replay of the Watts riots all over the country, but that would only last for a few days.

What I said was dont be surprised if McCain won. Actually, the right wing of the GOP stayed home and didnt vote for McCain. He lost something like 5 MILLION conservative voters that Bush had in 2004. So the Bible Thumpers werent even involved.

I predict something much worse than simple rioting. Once the Depression really gets going even the geezers will be out in the streets. Here's the scenario:

Youre middle-class and lose your job. Unemployment is chump change, and you cant get shit because you have two cars and a house. But the Usual Suspects are getting their usual handouts and cuts in the lines and VIP treatment. Youre eating weiners and pork & beans, and the Usual Suspects got their Food Stamps for steaks and chops and the good ice cream. Your thinking will change.
