How Trump can build the wall today — and make Mexico pay for it

Finally, Trump could take a page out of President Obama’s playbook and fund the border wall using a trade vehicle — specifically the implementing legislation for a renegotiated North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The fast track law, which governs consideration of trade agreements, contains language allowing the president to include provisions which he deems “strictly necessary or appropriate” to the respective trade agreement. This is the same broad language President Obama used to add Trade Adjustment Assistance to the Korea free trade agreement. Similar provisions were included in the original NAFTA legislation.

Under this line of reasoning, Trump could include wall funding to a re-negotiated NAFTA, arguing that a secure border is critical to the enforcement of a cross-border trade agreement with Mexico. Even better? He could require Mexico to pay for it.

Sure he could. He would only have to promise Mexico a bunch of jobs and to buy all of their coal.

But, but the Libs are claiming that renegotiating NAFTA is illegal.

I love how the Progressives tried to laugh at Trump for saying that the military was rich and inferring (because Trump didn't actually say it) that maybe the military could kick back some of that money to pay for the wall.

Meanwhile in reality, our military has TWO entire organizations whose sole purpose is to build things - the U.S. Navy's Construction Battalions (Seabees) and the Army Corp of Engineers. They have the equipment, skills, knowledge, mobility and capabilities, AND FUNDING to build the wall.

They built the Alaskan Highway so large non-military projects aren't beyond their mandate.

But no one even considered that maybe that's what Trump was thinking. Could it be that men of limited intelligence and experience are the ones who are laughing and pointing fingers over a concept they have no idea about?

But then Trump's contractor buddies won't have jobs.

I can't believe this is the only thread on the front page of the GB remotely related to the Locust Horde Caravan headed to The USA.

This should be a reality check but no one cares, and no one knows the history of how Rome fell.

The libs care. They'll laugh and party on the steps of the capital as the rest of the world burns.

Because marshmallows.

Leaving aside the debate about racism (some anti-immigration folks are indeed driven by racism, others are not):

I heard a couple of people in this forum advocating for more permeable borders with Mexico.
I'm not altruistic, so I don't understand why any nation would want to split their wealth with a poor country. Let alone the drug trade. America has enough problems of it's own, to add more.

"For several years, migrants have traveled north in caravans through Mexico around this time of year, both to protect themselves from crime and to highlight the plight of those fleeing Central America to escape poverty and danger."

This happened under Obama too. Unlike Trump who's seeking a military solution to a humanitarian problem Obama worked with the Mexican and various Central American governments to address the problem.

It's interesting to note that not only did the government under Obama end a program to help unaccompanied minors he also deported more immigrants than Trump.

Plus, you know, the wall won't work.

It's also really interesting how the Mexican president is using human lives, that he obviously has no concern for, like they are some kind of bargaining chip to protect his money.

Some leftist needs to inform the Mexican president that taking in illegals will benefit their economy. They are all future neurosurgeon rocket designer cultural enrichers!

I don't think the people who are arguing for open borders are altruistic either. I think they're probably more cantankerous and obstreperous than anything else. If you want something, they're against it because you want it.

And yet we still have caravans of illegals after all those wonderful Obama years...

The whole thing illustrates what Trump has been saying since day 1. The world has been abusing the US and it's generosity to the point they now believe it is their right to demand our money and affluence from us. It's past time we told them to knock it off.

The brown people are coming, the brown people are coming! In CARAVANS!!!! LOL

Interesting.
That's exactly what a friend of mine was telling me just the other day.
I found it hard to believe initially, because that's not how people portray things in online forums.

That is interesting.
So this means Obama supporters are unhappy with Trumps immigration policy because it isn't as hardcore as Obamas?

The US, Canada and Australia are lucky that the Ocean separates them from the rest of the world.

Money for travel isn't a problem for many poor people from Asia, Africa and Europe. Many of them borrow money from relatives, and pay them back gradually after overstaying their visitor visas and working ilegally in the States.

If the Immigration Department wasn't so acerbic in issuing travel visas, the US would be chocker with illegals from those continents too.

Lol. Depends on how one interprets it.

It was put to me -by a legal immigrant- in this way:
"I can't stand Trump either, but I don't understand why people villify him for doing exactly what Obama tried to do, and they praise Obama for his empathy towards illegals when he deported more illegals than any president."

I'm neutral on this matter because I don't know about these things, but the new information from my friend + dan_c took me by surprise.

Replace "brown people" with Christians.

The current Catholic pope is from Argentina. And the largest populations of Christians span from Mexico all the way to the tip of Argentina and Chile.

I wonder how these immigrants feel about fag marriage and women running around free and having abortions?

Yes, the most anti-Communist organization in Europe, the Vatican, is now for the first time run by a non-European who just happens to be a communist.:D

Those "brown people" allegedly coming are military aged males for the most part, just like the latest Muslim invaders of Europe were. They are coming to fight their way into our country. If we want to keep our country we will oblige them with the same kind of force.

And we're still having them under Trump and Trump is doing less about it. In fact, he's making the situation worse.

Most "illegals" are actually people who've come into the country via a legal route, a visa say, and just simply don't go home.

If you really think that a whole is 1. going to happen and 2. solve the problem you're an even bigger disillusion racist than I thought.

Wow. Another startling piece of news.

Then -and I have a lot of trepidation asking this, fearing that I'll be accused of 'racism'-
how come the majority of Ilegals are from Mexico?

I'm sure that many people from Asia, Africa and Europe would be keen to or tried to do that too.
