Lawrence Block has a new updated, expanded how to write tutorial out. It replaces the 1978 edition. I looked at it.
Block started writing in the 50s when he was 20. He's 78 or so.
Block insists no how to write manual works, and explains why. So his new book is a collection of lived wisdom and experiences relevant to writers. He published porn for 20 years, and cranked out around one book a month. He got a flat fee for each book, and many of them are lost and gone forever. Tho they show up, and are back in print. Block is mostly known for his mystery/detective novels.
He says short stories are a pain in the ass, novels are longer. Short stories must get the job done in 1500 words or so, and every word counts. Novels let you spread out the same idea and work.
I bought the book because PILOT isn't always around for consults, and Blocks repertoire is about half of PILOTs. Block is my Plan B.
