the gb has been duped more than once by complete frauds,
posters claiming faces, genders and lifestyles not their own,
poster who manage to gather personal information from others.

so how do you spot them?
is there a checklist?
what sets off your alarms?

...and, after we have an intelligent discussion, we can have ourselves a witch hunt! pitchforks & torches & baying mob. it'll be fun.

You and I had this discussion a LONG time ago.

I just ignore the noobs for a while. Only the most clever and/or determined make it past the 200th post without 'outing' themselves in one form or another. There is always something that just doesn't ring true. The same goes for the multi-alt crowd, although most of those offenders are fairly well known.

I don't really care about who's catfishing as I rarely bother making friends. So I don't get how people invite others into their lives without knowing who they're really dealing with. I never quite understood how KRC became such good and close friends with so many here without a single telephonic conversation (despite living in the same country) or FB friending.

On Fetlife, they have profiles that are verified. People send in various proofs of identity and also voice verify that they are who they are. It makes the community trust each other more.

A good rule to live by is that personal information should never be shared on the internet unless you know someone personally. You wouldn't give your SSN to a stranger, so why would anyone tell anything just as personal to someone on a porn website?

#3 a small number of pictures used over and over, maybe only shared with a select few (because publicly posted pics stand a greater chance of being outed), of a person of above average attractiveness.

Good point on #3. In retrospect, it was a tip-off when Ken and Paul used the same four or five pictures over and over for years.
 
Back when I used to give half a shit there was a distinct pattern. The poser would run their post count up on the PG before transitioning to the GB. This was far more popular with the multi-alt crowd.

That may still be the case.

But they had a whole ampics thread. It got linked during the whole drama and at that point all the pics seem to have been taken down, but it looked like there were many pics posted.

Hey, I didn't know about the GB. I only found it when I followed JBJ from the HT (who I followed from the PG to the HT and also from the GB to the AH). I'm always amazed by people who come to Lit for the forums and straight to the GB. How?

Anyway, I know that if I hadn't found the GB I would've given up on Lit forums and only stuck to the story site.
 
I never saw the ampics thread, so this is idle speculation, but most ampics threads don't show face or identifying markings. Anybody could pull my pics and use them on the internet (and that's happened, more than once that I know of) because I could be any girl, anywhere.

it's a hint, not fool proof.

if the pics are stolen from another profile on another site, there might be lots.

#4 pics that either never age/change, or age/change inconsistently.

Wouldn't a reverse look-up easily fix that? Unless of course they're using their wife/girlfriend's pic from their private collection (like KRC did).

I'm guilty of #4. I don't think I'm ever going to change it. People identify me by it (which is how Bill Pix and me had so much fun when we swapped AVs for a couple of days. but he kinda grew tired of the nasty posts and then asked to swap back).
