Hi!
i'm new to a lot of kinky things and recently discovered that i'm really into the feeling of something on my neck and not being able to breathe. except i don't trust anyone to do it to me, so i do it to myself when i get off but i'm not sure if theres a safe way to do it?

Not a good idea. People have tried and killed themselves. You might try holding your breath until you turn blue in the face. Be on a soft surface though. You'll get dizzy and maybe pass out but you will come to.

Here's an essay by Jay Wiseman, an EMT with a lot of BDSM experience.

http://www.telecomassociation.com/pubs/chokinggamereport/files/aea3.htm

The short version is:

As a person with years of medical education and experience, I know of no way whatsoever that either suffocation or strangulation can be done in a way that does not intrinsically put the recipient at risk of cardiac arrest. (There are also numerous additional risks; more on them later.)

...

I'm not going to state that breath control is something that nobody should ever do under any circumstances. I have no problem with informed, freely consenting people taking any degree of risk they wish. I am going to state that there is a great deal of ignorance regarding what actually happens to a body when it's suffocated or strangled, and that the actual degree of risk associated with these practices is far greater than most people believe.

Don’t do this. I had a friend who accidentally killed himself this way. It is extraordinarily dangerous to do when you’re alone.

It's a bad idea because there isn't a safe way. People die because they THINK that they have a fall safe that will release if they pass out. The problem is that their contraptions and rope loops don't always behave as planned. Playing Russian Roulette is stupid way to die, and masturbation isn't a good excuse to play Russian Roulette. You'll have lots more orgasms if you don't die.

If you are looking for new ways to enjoy an orgasm, be creative. Try a prostate massaging device if you haven't already (I'm assuming that you are male). There are no shortage if creative ways to masturbate. Just avoid going to jail or dying.

for me...you just have to be careful and not choke too hard. A woman should be able to tell when its a bit too much and tell someone. You need a guy who can listen as well as he does other things. :)

Until he inadvertently goes 1/64" too far or you cough or jerk due to a loud noise and the last thing you thing you see as you check out is him frantically dialing 911.

Fracture of the hyoid bone is likely to prove fatal because of asphyxia. Sufficient stress to cause a hyoid fracture will frequently produce soft-tissue injuries which mask its presence unless the attending physician deliberately examines the bone radiographically, or familiarity with the clinical symptoms alerts him to its possibility. Conversely, the external visible evidence of a fracture or severe soft-tissue injury may be so slight that the possibility is overlooked. Patients may die because of asphyxia associated with pharyngeal and laryngeal spasm, unless relieved by tracheotomy.

Oh, and a fractured hyoid is so indicative of strangulation that it's among the first things an autopsy looks for. And manslaughter is a standard charge.

"You just have to not put too much weight on that bridge. If it snaps and you fall to your death, then you know that was too much weight."

The point of the essay I linked to is that there is no reliable way to tell where "too hard" is before you cross that line.

"Should be" is doing a lot of work there. How exactly is a bottom supposed to know when their blood oxygen levels are getting below safe levels and assess their rate of preventricular contractions? Even before we get into how being almost-unconscious impairs ability to communicate or make judgement calls.

(also, it's twenty-nineteen, not all bottoms are women and not all tops are men)

Self-choking is ludicrously dangerous. I encourage you to not even entertain the idea of attempting it. If you're into breath play, please, please, please explore it carefully, slowly, and with a competent and caring partner.

This is a trade-off: safer for the choke-ee, but with the risk of a homicide charge for the partner if things do go wrong.
