I'm writing a story involving BDSM and I'm curious do I write a Master or Mistress as Master Joe/Mistress Jane or just Joe/Jane? I'm a little conflicted because it's more serious than it is erotic I think both work but I'm not sure.

I think that would depend on the situation; if the master/mistress is being a master/mistress I think adding the title to the name is appropriate, otherwise, in non-D/s situations the given name would be enough. And it would depend on the "protocol" you use too.

Personally, if I'm reading a story written in the third person and I read Master Joe or Mistress Jane, it turns me completely off. On the other hand, from a first person story, it is much more acceptable.

But that's just me. :)

How you refer to each other could well depend on the environment and circumstance. I've had D/S and B/D relationships with women that only existed in sexual situations but in "everyday" situations it was as any other relationship. If you are writhing about the weather and what happened at work the other day, your terms for each other could range from simple first names, to cutesy terms of endearment, to your "BDSM" names. When in sexual situations, he may want you to refer to him as "Sir" or "Master" (if your relationship has progressed to that stage) or maybe even Your Highness, who knows what YOU GUYS want.

Relationships are for the two people to decide. When I was in a sexual situation with one of my lady friends who was into more kinky things, I might want to be referred to as "Sir" but if I were getting a message from someone I don't know or dealing with someone in a non-sexual context, I would be put off by "Sir" as being pretentious unless it were being used as a more formal term of respect.

It's a matter of personal taste.
What would the characters in your story prefer? You are the one who knows them.

Yeah, this. Some people are big on the titles and the "s/She, h/He, ..." stuff. Others don't give a rat's arse.

<snip> but if I were getting a message from someone I don't know or dealing with someone in a non-sexual context, I would be put off by "Sir" as being pretentious unless it were being used as a more formal term of respect.

Totally unrelated to the topic, but I regularly use Sir or Ma'am with people I don't know. Even with kids, I'll sometimes address them as "young Sir" or "young Miss". It never occurred to me that someone might be put off by it. To me, it's simply a matter of manners and of courtesy.

My personal taste in erotica is just Mistress. For master I generally prefer sir, but for Master just that no name.

In real life I refer to her as Mrs. LC
